As an introvert, I'm so looking forward to more quiet time!

Retiring has brought some truly wonderful changes. Five months into this new chapter at 64, I’m 43 pounds lighter with much healthier cholesterol and A1C level back to normal. I haven’t been sick a single day since leaving my career behind.

Stepping away from nursing after 37 years —especially the last 17 years in demanding leadership roles— has been a complete reset. The daily body pain and inflammation are fading, and finally aligning my sleep with my natural rhythm feels like pure gold after years of shift work. Healing from burnout began the moment I retired.

Life feels so much lighter now. I’ve traded giving and receiving peer evaluations for simple, daily joys. Having maintained a supportive circle of friends outside of work is perfect for when my introverted side craves a coffee and a chat, and being married to an extrovert keeps life balanced. I truly wish there was more appreciation and research for those of us who established their identity outside of their professions.

This is purely subjective, but I was thrilled to retire (even though it was a little involuntary, I put up no fight at age 61+). I felt as if I had just completed a 33 year jail sentence and saw the sun for the first time in years. I know lots of people were totally invested in their jobs with all of their self worth derived from that. Fortunately, I had saved and invested for decades so beyond a few months of unease, I found I had enough coming in to pay for everything needed and when I hit 65 insurance costs fell precipitously. I took SS at 68+ and my investments have grown to the point where my current income is twice what my last salary was. I sleep better, I don't set the alarm clock, travel when I want and am more relaxed than I have been in 60 years. Yes, IRMAA was an unpleasant shock, but it is more irritant than danger. Happy retirement to all who get there!

Insomnia, chest pains, headaches, stomach aches, high blood pressure, crying in my car all disappear the day you retire

My sleep pattern is amusing. Stay up until ten, midnight, three. Wake up at five, noon, ten. Doesn't matter. Ride bike and motorcycles when I want.
IRMAA does matter.

I think that one of the major issues for retirees is that we've been disciplined all our working life to save save save... then suddenly it's about spend spend spend .. not normal behaviour for us and it takes a while to become comfortable with this new behaviour. Some never do.
