  People back then were not stupid. They were craftsmen who knew their world. Much more natural than Roman stuff. Probably why they can't  find much evidence as natural work returns to nature.

  We like to watch shows about archeology on BBC. Lately they have been pushing the strange idea that hillforts weren&apos;t really defensive in nature when they obviously were. What group would invest the huge time and effort they require to build unless they had to?<br>-------------------<br>Raiding parties between tribes, clans, or groups in Iron Age Britain were relatively common, especially as population increased and competition for resources like land, livestock, and grain intensified.<br><br>Inter-tribal hostility and warfare were characteristic of the period, particularly as tribal boundaries formed and competition for arable land grew.<br><br>The prevalence of hillforts—over 2,000 across Britain—reflects the need for defensive measures against such raids, with many serving as refuges for people, livestock, and stored grain during attacks.<br><br>Archaeological evidence, including weapons, fortifications, and mass storage pits, supports the idea that raiding for livestock and valuables was a significant threat.<br><br>Population growth and land shortages in the Iron Age likely increased tensions and the frequency of raids, particularly in the more densely settled south.<br><br>While some hillforts may have served other purposes, their defensive features and siting indicate that protection from raids was a major concern.<br><br>In summary, raiding for livestock, grain, and valuables was a regular feature of Iron Age society in Britain, shaping settlement patterns and prompting the widespread construction of defensive structures like hillforts.

  I just want to point out that the left temple area of the skull has an obvious puncture which seems to have occurred before death and partially healed up. &nbsp;At least my TV makes it look so. &nbsp;No cranium I have excavated ever had a similar entry “hole” that was totally ignored. &nbsp;What?
