  Another thing about the Blair Witch project marketing is that most people weren&apos;t using the internet in 1999 the way we do today. With relatively few exceptions, almost nobody was using it 24 hours like we do now. So most people weren&apos;t learning the rumour about the actors being missing from visiting a website, but via word of mouth from their friends. And that gave the rumour more validity, because we&apos;re naturally more inclined to believe something when it&apos;s coming from someone we trust.

  The marketing of The Blair Witch Project was even more brilliant than this guy lets on. Even though it was the early days of the internet, the creators set up a website that built out the mythology of the film’s world. They would drop new material on the website weekly, detailing the fictional history of the witch, the town, and a series of kidnappings/murders that happened there. These took the form of interviews, newspaper articles, and police reports. By the time the actual film released, viewers who had kept up with this fictional history got an even richer story than the film overtly presents.

  The mistake Hollywood makes every time is try to make horror targeted for general audiences, when horror is super niche and only work if treated that way.
