Why This Resident Regrets Going Into Radiology

As a rads resident, I think this resident is forgetting how hard other specialties residencies are. I am willing to bet any amount of money he is working less than all residents outside of psych and derm. Just doesn’t feel that way because there is an immense amount of studying outside of work, if you don’t get ahead of it as a first year then it piles up and boards come around and you will feel stressed.

I have so much respect for radiologists. They are probably the most knowledgeable physicians in medicine. It’s not chill though at all. It also feels EXTREMELY repetitive. I was considering the specialty in medical school but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d be doing just that for the rest of my life. I’m too social. Regardless, so much respect and it sounds like this physician is going through a hard time that he or she will get through!!

I think it’s also possible that it isn’t the fault of DR as a whole, but that his or her residency is just very malignant.

MS3 and will be applying DR next year. I am the "quiet kid" and have always been interested in the less patient-facing specialties!

Personal experience: I am not a radiology resident, but I distinctly remember my residency experience being absolutely terrible. It was very much a workhorse, non-resident friendly program. I was in a negative headspace all the time.

Now that I’m a few years, I do think that that experience, turned me into a better physician with more resilience. To be honest, there are some days now what I’m working just as hard as I was as a resident. But my ability is higher, my tolerance is better, and I don’t think I could’ve gotten to this point without burning in the fire.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not making light of this person‘s current mental state. He sounds burned out. But I think he can get through this.

Rads resident here. I love my field but there is a fair share of BS that we have to deal with too. Some clinicians want everything done immediately and as a radiologist you can't say no. At least with some other specialties, you can deny or push off consults but radiology is an essential service that specialties depend on to make major decisions (operative vs not operative, admit/send home). And so there's a lot of pressure to please those physicians and difficult when everyone thinks their study is the most important.

Our reports are scrutinized to the extent that some doctors think they are better than you at what you do. I think thats unique to radiology because I would never tell a cardiologist that i'm better at reading an EKG or tell a surgeon that I can do a lap appy better than they can. It's kind of insulting and condescending. While I respect their opinions, it does wear on you when its something you have to deal with constantly and can't say anything but "thats just my opinion".

As for AI, it has not changed the workflow whatsoever. AI currently doesn't not even interpret or even write reports on their own. At most, they flag a study that it thinks may have some abnormality. Even then, the false positive rate is high enough that it would be better if I just glanced at it myself. Maybe that will change in the future but as of now, it's more or less useless.

As someone who considered this as the quiet kid too... I asked the family radiology people this since they seemed chill... but they have one colleague that's a lot like me and they seemed so stuck... I started coming out thinking of pmr with my 2 main priorities being work-life balance (this will help me recover as a quiet kid) and some clinical skills (I didn't ever want to loose this... something that's hard because clinical radiology is so rare and most are reporting machines...)
