Who's tired of me making videos around this concept?

I am 54 years old and I started playing tennis again a few years ago because I was diagnosed with diabetes 2, before that I hadn’t played tennis in 22 years or more.
Since I have been back I noticed something about myself that made me play better and feel better, and something people take for granted, is that we have to exercise off the courts as well as train on the courts to become better players. If you are out of shape then you won’t be able to get to the ball properly and you will be getting worn down on the courts.
So no matter how well you hit the ball if you aren’t training off the courts you will be stuck at a certain level. It’s something that I have been researching for a few years now and I have learned to train differently! Great job on the video coach!

When younger, my forehand was heavy toospin and backhand flatter and 2 handed. Now an old man and my forehand is a squash shot with heavy slice. Backhand is now one handed with slice and fkatter. Mostly because top spin seems to require more footwork and energy. Also, in doubles which old people play keeping ball low to opposing players feet makes for hard to hit good volleys. Lots of back spin and low. No sitters to forehand. And lobs to backhand which is tough shot even for the pros. Good lobs is very underrated. I wish I was a better lobber.

Although a good lesson, I think it’s a bit oversimplistic to say that’s why people remain at 3.5. There are 4.5 players called pushers who use 0 or negligible amounts of topspin but use slice for control. Tennis is tough physically and mentally and 3.5 is where most sit in the bell curve, anyone above that usually were coached early or play an unusual playstyle that is difficult for the average rec player to counter such as slicing everything

The best 2-person drill to improve topspin is mini-tennis. Standing right behind the service line and hitting controlled topspin to the other player so that the ball lands in the service box.

I do this before playing friendly non-league matches (right after volleys) to feel the topspin on my racket - done before hitting at the baseline.

This little drill also tells you a lot about the person you are hitting with if they have issues getting the ball into the service box.
