Who’d a thunk I’d be spending so much time watching videos about tennis, but it’s such a cerebral game that this stuff makes a difference and has vastly improved my game

It's great when my opponent rages at me for hitting the ball out of reach. I've been practicing drawing my opponent to the net and then lobbing them. It's so easy that way to get into their heads quickly. I'm also practicing getting back from the net as soon as I see the lob coming and my overheads are getting better! Stokke states the obvious: MOVE YOUR FEET!!

I always felt the best path to train a snow-white beginner to becoming a solid 4.0 player is to start them off with volley and overhead skills first. Get them super comfortable at the net from the very beginning and learning how to end points there. Learning to hit "perfect" groundstrokes to play 3.5 is totally unnecessary. Just being consistent and identifying a well place groundstroke is more important because then you can close in and finish at the net with a highly developed net game.

I practice overheads myself by throwing the ball high and slightly backwards. Then I turn, back up and try to hit my overhead, before or after the bounce depending on the flight of the ball.

Something that helps me (and my OH is mediocre) is not trying to hit a winner if it is a challenging lob. I will aim for the middle looking to set up an easier second shot.

Grear drill. Slice one side no bounce other side lots of OH reps. However. You can very much self feed almost any kind of over head. Lob strait up turn prepare and self fed overhead from angles.

So if I can get to a yard behind the service line, but just kind of block or tap the ball rather than an offensive overhead, should I still do that or is it better in that situation to let the ball bounce and let my partner take it?

Absolutely brilliant advice 99% of doubles amateur players (up to 4.5 level) fu..k up = once there’s a great deep volley they BOTH get closer to the net and are then often bypassed by a lob…( done not deliberately but pure instinct) 🤣👌🤷🏻
