On the plane at the end Jones the scientist from the future introduces herself as being in "insurance" so you could imagine she's going to get his sample of the pure virus and work on securing a cure for the future.

The director is actually the most important name to know. Terry Gilliam has a... unique style when it comes to storytelling. You're familiar with him as a member of Monty Python.

Such a tragic tale for Cole. He’s essentially stuck in a time loop of watching himself get shot, then growing up to be sent back and get shot in front of his younger self, then growing up to repeat everything.
Best time travel movie ever. 👍

@44:00 You should watch Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo!

Cole's line of "All I see are dead people" is even more surreal because it later resurfaces in The Sixth Sense.

When the evil germ spreader shakes the hand of the lady and the drink, she gets infected with the original stain, she’s then brought to the future, the same way as Cole was, but with the original strain. They may then be able to cure.

The key lies in the doctor's line "I'm in insurance" ! It's the best movie ever made on the topic of recursive history. That is why the past could not be changed, they only needed to track down the virus to save the future. So Cole was successful. A brilliant movie!

Terry Gilliam is a great director, and this is one of his finest films. The former Monty Python animator has some other really good, off-beat and beautiful films: "The Fisher King," starring Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" with Johnny Depp, and my personal favorite: "Brazil" with Jonathan Pryce, Robert DeNiro and Python alumni Michael Palin.

About the redheaded villain: Memory contamination is a thing. The woman even says earlier in the film that his claim that she has always been in his dream is that now that he knows her, she became the person in the dream. His mind could put her face into the dream. But as we see, she really was always in what we realize is a memory. The man, however, is different. Bruce's character remembers the red hair, but he hasn't met the person anytime recently. So when he sees a man who could easily be the man, Brad's face gets worked into the memory. If he had met the other man sooner, he may have remembered his face more accurately, although he clearly could have put anyone's face into that memory. It helps throw a curveball for viewers.

Witnesses to crimes often have all sorts of unreliable information. If they see certain things afterward, it can affect what they thought they saw. Even the types of questions can lead them to say things that weren't actually observed. I love how this movie uses a little misdirection in claiming the woman became her, but she was always that woman...but it's the man that was a result of memory contamination.

The female sitting next to the bad guy on the plane is one of the scientists from the future. She has returned, as James Cole described earlier, to collect a pure form of the germ to return to the future and begin the process to return to the surface. So, ostensibly the virus would still spread due to the initial release in an airport.
