  The ‘washing machines’ were disk drives. You can see some of the multi-platter disks sitting on top in blue plastic containers. The disks were very heavy and the ones I worked with would hold 300MB. You can also see some tape drives on the right. I worked with these and a lot of the other things you see here. My first computer class was programming an IBM 360 in Fortran using punched cards in 1974. I worked as a software engineer until I retired in 2024.

  U.S. President Ronald Reagan screened WarGames at Camp David the weekend it was released, and it freaked him out. Reagan brought it up a few days later at a White House meeting that included the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and asked, “Could something like this really happen? Could someone break into our most sensitive computers?” The answer came back a week later: “Mr. President, the problem is much worse than you think.” That led not only to a significant revamp of how computer security was handled at the Defense Department, but also passage of an anti-hacking law that would eventually evolve into our current Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Clips of WarGames were shown during the congressional hearings where lawmakers debated the need for hacking legislation. &nbsp; <br> <br>I like to watch WarGames in a double-bill with Project X (1987), another Matthew Broderick movie that could be seen as a loose continuation of the story.

  TRON + WarGames = the reason I got a Commodore 64 as my Christmas present as an 8-yearl-old in 1983.

  Floppy disks came in 3 sizes, 8&quot; came first. &nbsp;When they increased the density of the information writing on the disk they shrank the format to 5 1/4&quot; disks. &nbsp;This was dominant for a long time and shared a soft outer cover material with 8&quot; disks. &nbsp;After some time they shrank again to the 3 1/2&quot; format but now a plastic cover with a spring loaded metal cover opening for reading the disk.<br>What really wild is that much of what the main character did wasn&apos;t a crime yet, there were no laws against hacking. &nbsp;president Reagan screened the movie and this triggered a series of legislation creation and national defense review to prevent this from happening in real life.

  Prepare to have your minds blown with the best fact ever: The role of Professor Falken was actually written for....JOHN LENNON. The writers desperately wanted to get John - (yes, The Beatle) - to act in their film. It&apos;s why Falken speaks in a certain way, like John often did.
