I like to call my hand-me-down furniture (solid 90% is from 1950 or earlier) generational wealth 😂

We use the mantra, “something they want, something they need, something to wear, something to read.” Works for Christmas and birthdays too

What I find interesting about fast fashion when I was a teenager in the 2000s and I was buying clothing from the mall. I still have some of those shirts in great condition even though I wore them to death. But a shirt I might have ordered from Amazon a year ago is already falling apart. So even the quality of fast fashion has dropped in the last 20 years.

In the 1980s I worked with a German Jewish woman who had fled to England before things got bad for her people in Germany. One of the most powerful conversations in my life was when she talked about clothing during the war. She had a son to raise and she explained that if her sweater had a hole that could no longer be mended, she would unravel it for the yarn to knit a vest for herself and socks for her son. My mind was -- as people of my generation would say --blown!

My husband and I became increasingly frustrated with all those entertainment subscriptions, so we cancelled them and now stick to dvds and - I know, shocking - going to the movies on a Friday night. Our movie theatre nearby even shows older classics every first Tuesday of the month. It’s a special treat we enjoy together for date night, and it’s so much more satisfying than mindless binging.

My father joined the US Navy as soon as he turned 18 years old in early 1942. When he went into a veteran's home (his choice), he went through all his boxes of papers and tossed most of them. I discovered and rescued a large bundle of all the letters his family sent him while he was in basic training. I put them all in chronological order and transcribed them. What a wonderful picture of a large family dealing with sons in the service, daughters in the wartime factories, rationing, making do, raising poultry in a suburban backyard, describing town events and entertainments. Dad was the eighth of nine children, some were married and had their own families, single ones moved in with the parents to save money and pool ration coupons. I printed it all out with old photos of the family from those days and sent them to many cousins. Dad loved it and shared it with the nurses at the Home. I'm so glad I did it.

I think once you just shop for what you actually need and not for larks, it saves you so much time to do what you actually enjoy.

Found my grandmas and great grandmas handmade linen towels dated 1921. Unused! They grown the flax, processed it, spun it and then weaved it. Small panels of homewoven linen bedsheet is (nearly invisible) handsewn togheter to make a larger sheet. These items are more precious to me than ornamental knick-knacks because these I can use in my everyday life. Hopefully I can sew the towels toghether to form an apron.

One of the most ironic twists in this style of living is that its very eco friendly, and if companies stopped prioritizing garbage and instead good, durable items, we could have and use less, and in turn pollute less. The advancements of caring for the earth of now, with the same priority on craftsmanship and lasting quality could easily save much of earth.
