  I’m always impressed how every further story about Wilhelm II I learn makes him seem more and more pitiful. He’d be a truly tragic figure if it weren’t for the number of people who suffered for his choices.

  It was Queen Victoria who was responsible for the early death of the Emperor Frederick III. His German doctors had diagnosed cancer of the larynx very early on and advised immediate surgery. At that stage, he stood a good chance of a cure. However, his wife asked her mother for advice and Queen Victoria insisted that the Emperor should be examined by her own personal physician. There was a delay in his arrival in Berlin. Then, he diagnosed only a sore throat as the most likely cause and advised a “wait and see” approach. The German doctors strongly disagreed, however, Victoria refused to take any advice other than that of her mother’s physician. By the time that even the British physician was obliged to agree to a diagnosis of cancer, it was too late for surgery to offer any prospect of a cure. If the Emperor had survived the cancer, then it is possible that he might still have been alive in 1914. Even if not, he might, very well, have succeeded in moderating the extreme Prussian militarism which led to the War.

  Frederick III&apos;s untimely death reminds me a lot of Lincoln&apos;s assassination, in that the actions of their successors led directly to the catastrophes of WWI and the nadir of American race relations. They&apos;re the perfect counterfactuals, perfect &quot;what ifs&quot; that we can lift out of history, even if their actual records and circumstances show their limitations. I seriously doubt that, had they lived, we wouldn&apos;t see a different kind of nadir or WWI type conflict. But it <b>would</b> be different, which means we can fantasize about it endlessly.

  someone out there wrote a peculiar story calle &quot;The Year of Four Emperors&quot; - an alternate history where Kaiser Wilhelm II barely gets his bum on the throne before he drops dead from cholera, his young son lives under a regency and german history goes down an interesting path
