  One great irony of the matter is, in 1807, Kolberg was besieged by French forces, and, in 1945, it was defended by elements of the French SS division Charlemagne.

  One thing that stands out to me is the architectural scenery in this movie: the footage of the old historical towns like Konigsberg (Kaliningrad today). The cathedrals, spires, and the infamous Konigsberg Castle which didn&apos;t survive after the war. It&apos;s a visual time-capsule into the past.

  Kolberg was described as Gone With the Wind for the Nazis. Except in this case, barely anyone saw this film when it was released in 1945.

  It&apos;s so surrealistic seeing my hometown while it was still a german city. It&apos;s like being familiar and foreign at the same time.

  Looking at this footage, it’s absolutely unbelievable that it was filmed during the last suicidal gasps of Nazi Germany. I had no idea that German infrastructure and society were still intact enough to make this sort of thing.

  A lot of claims about this movie that may or may not be accurate, but I’d read that entire divisions were taken out of battle to act as extras in the epic war scenes, when they would have been much more useful at the front. <br>Then with few theatres still operating in January 1945, it was said that more people acted in this movie than those who actually saw it.
