  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0X_VTq60G5k&amp;t=210">3:30</a> this clip made me so sad. Sara was handling herself quite elegantly all things considered. She’s 14, the moment she steps on stage, the crowd boos her before she can say anything and a crowd of strangers is telling her how ugly they think she looks without bothering to ask her anything about herself, all while her mother says she doesn’t care about her family. Given than, noncommitally flipping the bird and replying to a stranger saying “I think you look ugly” with “I think you look ugly, too” is pretty mild for such an emotionally heightened and challenging time in your life. Hope she’s doing well now

  I legit have a hard time knowing what styles are &quot;mainstream&quot; anymore bc micro-trends and fast-fashion cycle too fast.

  In 2012, almost a hundred teenage Iraqi boys/young men were killed by the police for dressing emo, because “it’s demonic”. I always think of that story when I hear people complaining about alternative people.

  i&apos;ve been goth for several years now, and seeing Alyssa Liu, who has facial piercings and dyed hair like me, made me jump up and realize that I can actually take up figure skating as a hobby. not seeing anyone who looked like me growing up as someone who always loved looking at figure skaters made me not even touch the sport as a kid. now I&apos;m a grown adult and learning how to figure skate and planning to skate to my favorite Siouxsie songs! i see even more alternative people in my local rink, so it&apos;s increased my confidence and security going there. great video Ro &lt;3

  Also, a note on the punk scene: it’s super welcoming. Real punks don’t give a shit how you dress, as long as you’re supportive of others, make some noise at shows, and don’t turn your nose at minorities- like homeless people, sex workers, drug users, queer people, etc. Source: I’m dating a punk and have only ever received compliments on the way I dress, which is very much 70s hippie

  Alt fashion becoming mainstream is just an online outrage… I live in a very modern city and is very rare to see people wearing full goth outfits on the streets…

  Anyone questioning Alyssa Liu&apos;s style does not know anything about figure skating. If you fall outside of what the judges think is the ideal appearance, your scores are affected by that. Not just beauty standards, if you don&apos;t have a lot of money for super expensive costumes, you are tanked in your Components scores. So she genuinely risked a lot to express her style. Potentially never winning a competition again. To me, this is the essence of what it means to be &apos;alternative&apos;.

  I&apos;ve been goth since the 90s and I have come to the conclusion that caring overly much about &quot;styles&quot; or how other people chose to present is a fast track to bitterness and/or disenchantment with the things that actually mattered when these things began (such as music and community). If you listen to goth music and identify with the goth subculture, participating in whatever way works for you, then you are probably a goth. The stylistic stuff is self expression, and can be a part of it all, for sure. I personally like dressing a certain way... but I know many goths my age who would not be considered alternative by TikTok standards, simply because they &quot;don&apos;t look goth&quot; anymore.
