My mother was a Conover, and my aunt did a lot of research. What is said here, I've known for years and more.

I have several not in this video. Probably because no super famous people with those names. Ex.: Creole Louisiana name Hoffpauir.

Peter Studebaker born in 1695 is my 6th great grandfather. I have been to a Studebaker reunion in 2011 in Ohio. I have also researched much about my ancestors. The biggest highlight was when I was able to tour his home in Washington county, Maryland in 2017. The current owner graciously allowed me a tour.

This was sooo interesting to me. Those Dutch names in New Amsterdam (New York area) were different and to see them change to something Anglinized is rare. I never know that was how certain folks got their surnames. I find people's surnames fascinating. They say sooo much to me...
For example- Krankheyt, Epgert, Pfoersching, Cambow (1:16) to Cronkite, Apgar, Pershing, Cumbo (1:27)
And these names only exist in the United States. Fascinating.
Wokfert G. Van Couwenhoven a baker and clother bleacher (2:01) became Conover. And this name only exists in the United States. And today the Conovers descended from this man. Fascinating.
Quackenbosch (3:50) were Dutch brick makers. This name turned to Quackenbush.
Jacques Cortelyou (4:33) was a surveyor, Utrecht; Huguenot descent (French Protestants) spelling is now- Cortelyou
Gijsbert Opdijk (5:37) an officer of the Dutch West Indian Company and a commander at Fort Good Hope - Anglicizing to the surname Updike.
Harmen Jansen (6:30) a Dutch colonist in the Albany area - His surname became Knickerbocker. This is why we have the New York Knicks. Interesting.
Krankheyt became Cronkite, such as with journalist Walter Cronkite (8:31) Fascinating
The Pennsylvania Germans:
Rhineland Fredrich Epgert (9:45) becames Apgar
The surname Pickel (11:21) is from German surname Bickel and Beuchel
Immigrant Kusters from the Rhineland area were given the surname Custer (12:14). A kuster was a German church care taker.
Andreas Huber (12:49) became "Hoover". His descendant was President Herbert Hoover the 31st president of the United States.
Wannenmacher became Wannamaker (13:45) as in John Wannamaker the Philadelphia merchant and had retail stores
Pfannebacker became Pennypacker (14:24) Henry Pfannebacker Samuel Pennypacker
Johan Pieter Rockenfeller (15:19) brought the surname which became Rockerfeller In New Jersey, the other branch of their family became Rockerfellow. Fascinating.
Staudenbecker family (16:12) became the Studebaker family. Think of the 1950s Studebaker automobile.
Pfoersching (17:21) became Pershing. Ex- General John H Pershing
Hans Michael Gutknecht became Goodnight (18:32) ex- Famous Texas rancher Charles Goodnight and was a Texas ranger scout- Think "Goodnight/Loving Trail" He also invented the chuck wagon.
A Huguenot family name- Rapelje (19:45) became Rapelye Joris and his new bride were sent to New Netherlands.
Joost Durie (22:31) a Huegenot refugee's surname became Dureyea
Vincent Rongnion (24:03) became Ronyon
The African names that survived: (25:24)
Cumbo (25:56) became Cambo
Mozingo (27:33) became Mozingo (28:14) He was an African man who bought his freedom, became a Tobaccoist, and married and English woman named Mary. His white descendant, Joe Mozingo, wrote a book (28:19) about his family.
