Part 1 covered 15 Mayflower surnames. 477,000 of you watched it. This is Part 2 — 15 more surnames, 15 more stories. Some more extraordinary than anything in the first video. CARVER — First governor of Plymouth Colony, elected while still on the ship. Died April 1621, four months after landing. His wife Katherine died six weeks later. Both dead before the first summer ended. CHILTON — James Chilton, oldest passenger at 64, died December 18 1620. His wife died six weeks later. Their 13-year-old daughter Mary survived and is traditionally the first person to step on Plymouth Rock. She had 10 children and lived until 1679. The Chilton Club in Boston is named in her honour. MORE — Four children sent to America as servants by their father who believed they were illegitimate. Three died in the first winter. Only Richard survived. In 1959 historians discovered the More children had royal descent from King Henry II of England and King David I of Scotland. Richard became a sea captain. His Salem tombstone is the only surviving original Mayflower passenger gravestone. DOTY — In June 1621, seven months after landing, Edward Doty fought the first duel in American history — swords and daggers with a fellow servant. Both wounded. Punishment: tied together by hands and feet. Doty survived, gained his freedom, and has documented descendants. ROGERS — Thomas Rogers signed the Mayflower Compact and died that winter. His 17-year-old son Joseph survived, married, and had nine children. Documented in the Silver Books. SOULE — George Soule came as a servant, survived the first winter, gained his freedom, and had eight children. Richard Gere is a documented descendant — Soule is one of six Mayflower lines converging in the actor. BROWNE — Peter Browne got lost in the woods with John Goodman shortly after landing. Two nights in the forest. Surrounded by what they thought were lions — probably mountain lions or wolves. They climbed a tree. Made it back to Plymouth. Married twice, four children, documented descendants. EATON — Carpenter from Bristol. Wife died in the first winter. Francis remarried twice more in Plymouth Colony. Three wives buried in the same colony. Samuel Eaton survived and has documented descendants. PRIEST — Degory Priest died January 1 1621. His wife was still in Leiden. She arrived on the Anne in 1623 to find her husband had been dead for two years. She stayed. Documented descendants through the Priest-Allerton line. SAMSON — 16 years old on the Mayflower. Both his uncle and aunt died in the first winter. Henry survived and lived until approximately 1684 — one of the longest-surviving passengers. Descendants in the Silver Books. FLETCHER — Moses Fletcher was a blacksmith. The colony desperately needed his skills. He died in the first winter. His descendants are documented by the GSMD. FULLER (EDWARD) — Not Samuel Fuller the physician from Part 1. Edward was Samuel's brother — same ship, separate line. Edward and his wife both died in the first winter. Their 12-year-old son Samuel Jr survived. Two Fuller brothers, two separate Silver Book entries. GOODMAN — John Goodman's two dogs — a spaniel and a mastiff — are among the only named non-human Mayflower passengers. He got lost in the woods with Peter Browne for two nights. He died shortly after the first winter. The spaniel chased deer and never came back. The mastiff outlived him. HOPKINS (CHILDREN) — Constance and Giles Hopkins — children of Stephen Hopkins from Part 1, from his first marriage — are documented as separate descendant lines from their father. Two separate Silver Book entries. Constance married Nicholas Snow. Giles married Catherine Wheldon. WINSLOW (GILBERT) — Not Edward Winslow from Part 1. Gilbert was Edward's brother — came as a Stranger because his brother was coming. Survived the first winter. Eventually returned to England. Same famous surname. Different story.
