I am very happy that the channel is active and producing new content. I learn a lot by watching it and I think other audiophiles will also appreciate it. Love my Calypso MK4. Greetings from Poland!

I met you both at the Bristol show this year and your tonearm and rest of the system had the best sound in the whole show BY FAR! Great videos on the channel. Please keep this up! Liked and subscribed!

Listening to music is truly delightful. When the character of the sound and the songs we listen to align with our tastes, the soul begins to dance.

Fun fact: the actual ground (under our feet) is itself a mass of stray currents, especially in industrial areas, but also depending on the type of soil. It is known to cause corrosion in older cast iron water mains.

Mark’s explanation of parasitic noise at 7:49 is awesome! Lots of people use the term but nobody ever explains it. MgHz is ultrasonic, people write it off as inaudible. But it creates capacitance in all the many thousands of transistors in a component. There can be thousands on just a single chip. All of them releasing this stored charge at random, and this is at frequencies that are very audible, and this results in a harsh grainy flat sound.

Even though I'm an avid 2 channel stereo music lover, I also love the occasional movie, too, and due to lack of space, I have to optimise my setup for multi-channel listening also. However, when it came listening to my newly discovered multi-channel setup, I immediately became aware of how the room sounded different. Didn't know what it was at first, but coming from an audio black background, there was no way I was prepared to put up with it!

Even after auditioning 3 separate AVR's, the same electrical presence had replaced the natural ambient sound of the room. That told me the extremely faint background signal noise I had been experiencing (poor description) had nothing to do with the actual units. Therefore, my attention changed to the cables. And even then It was only on the third occasion after I finally ended up purchasing shielded cables did the noise floor within my small room finally start to came down to satisfactory levels.

Cables often act as antennas for attracting RF, and the longer the cable, the better the antenna. Probably explains why when I used to disconnect my heights and surrounds within 10 minutes, the faint background signal noise (RF/EMI) within my small room used to almost practically disappear/dissipate.

If one has the same sensitivities and is looking to address this matter, but is also hoping to notice (hear) the incremental differences, I would suggest starting with analogue cables before moving on to digital and power cables (no good addressing the quietest when one hasn't addressed the noisiest)

Trying to achieve a totally silent room sadly has turned into obsession for me. However, the results speak for themselves. When pressing pause (or mute) from the MLP there are times that my 9 channels and three active subwoofers which are firing in a small 4 × 3.5 m living room I'm unable to differentiate whether the systems on or whether the systems actually switched off. Of course, audiophile equipment helps, and certain AC filtration helps further, but in reality, for one to have a totally silent room, shielded cables in my experience are where it's at.

When friends or guests come over, I used to show them how loud the system goes. Nowadays, I prefer to press mute and show them how my quiet it goes

None of them gets it, of course 😂

Thanks for a very informative video...enjoyed learning additional info on grounding

I have always been told that the ground serves to dissipate the junk signals into the earth. Although electrical systems, regulations vary depending country. In my country the ground wire goes directly into the ground and has to be less than 30 Ohms. However it is a fact that the mains is contaminated by a lot of junk devices due to their bad, cheap design.
Households have been shifted from resistive loads to exclusively inductive loads. In the past there was something called COS Phi (Power Factor), apparently nobody bothers about it. Ideally it should be 1. I measured it and in some cases it was even below 0.6!! The industry is supposed to still correct for that issue. Households do not need to, so your Phone charger, LED-lights, Induction plates do not bother having a correcting capacitance to optimise the power factor.
To makes things worser, in my country we have 2 distribution methods for electricity to households. Although it is called 230V mono-phase. In 75% of the cases you have 230V from 2 phases of a 3 phase network (3x230V). The rest gets the better stuff i.e. phase and N from (3x400V + N).
Let's not talk about the quality of the inverters used in solar panels with are prone to HF pollution.

If I want to enjoy my Hi-Fi system I have to listen late at night. Perhaps you can relate this to the amount of ethylic substances consumed, but this is not the case.

Great discussion! I met Mark Baker and sons at High End Munich 2024. Great room, of course. Wonderful experience. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Excellent video. I do professional stereo setups and taming noise via modern grounding devices makes a big difference in system performance.

Watching this makes me wonder if this is part of the reason people like vintage receivers so much. In general, they have such a high noise floor that it acts to mask certain problems?
