This this is AI. Also everyone Nintendo did not win. You can get a 450 in 1 R4 cartridge for $20 online that has every Pokémon game ever and it works on the newest 3ds and every other one.

Each instance of piracy is not a lost sale, that's nonsense logic industry suits use to inflate numbers.

The use of AI is obvious, but still interesting

Yeah, I wanted to buy Dementiun 1-2 and Moon on the DS so bad, but those games were never made it to the shelves in my county. So I bought an R4 and played them.

I also waited for Moon to be released on the 3DS, but never made it to the eshop in the EU, only US. So I just recently hacked my 3DS so I could play it.

I also tried Cing's games using the R4 and instantly loved them. So later I bought an original copy of Hotel Dusk and Last Window later.

in 2007, it took you way longer than 30seconds to transfer 40 games, even small ones like DS/GBA ROMs. Internet/File Transfer was not that quick back then

Minor correction about the DSi's improved security. The RSA private/key combo used for TWL carts (games that had DSi features) was designed to protect the roms from modification. It was mainly to keep the console from being taken over by modified game data. TWL cart hardware communication did have improved security but it was via the addition of an additional blowfish key for TWL region of the carts and more or less worked in a similar manner to the older system used on the DS/DS Lite. You could still make thirdparty/fake game carts if you managed to dump the added TWL blowfish keys. But you'd only be able to put exact copies of single games on them and not use any custom software like a flashcart rom loader menu and what not. (and because of this, flashcart makers never really bothered with that)

They also added a "white list" system in firmware 1.4 which blocked a lot of older flashcarts try and keep the older DS library secure. At this point it was a endless cat and mouse game because flashcart makers then started spoofing game data so that some portion of the game would be the same so that they match the checks in the white list but had exploited data that took over the game at some specific stage of the boot process. This was why many flashcarts during this time no longer had custom banners and such matching their branding (or no banner at like the original R4s). This allowed them to continue allowing piracy of the DS library. The main limitation was that these flashcarts could only run DS games in DS mode. Games with DSi features couldn't use the DSi features because the added ram/clock speeds/camera from DSi mode is no longer accessible when the system firmware boots the game cart since they had to spoof DS games and not DSi games. (spoofing modified DSi games would require breaking the RSA scheme so no one succeeded. Though there was one that got around that via save data exploits instead. I'll mention that later)

They had to use the matching banner (icon/text of the inserted game when seen in the console's firmware menus) and the game's ARM binaries (the game code the console boots for each processor on the console. DS/DSi had 2 CPUs in them. The older arm7 which also ran GBA games for the DS/DS Lite, and the updated ARM9 that is only used for DS/DSi stuff. On DSi the arm9 had higher clock speeds if in DSi mode). The "DS Cart White List" had HMAC-SHA1 hashes of the banner, and the specific binaries for each cpu that each game cart had. Also supported multiple "versions" of the same game and each can be checked seperately. They also had a third section in the white list that checked specific areas of the game rom to make sure they weren't altered. (typically data in NitroFS/Overlay regions). This was the part they had to constantly update when flashcarts started spoofing games to get around the main checks.

So long story short, the new RSA key system didn't protect against fake cart hardware. It mainly protects the system from modified software. In fact, at some point in 2013 CycloDS made a DSi enabled flashcart that could do DSi game software that retained DSi features. It involved spoofing an entire unmodified Cooking Mama game and used a modified save file to exploit the game to take it over since they couldn't modify the game data without breaking the RSA. That shows that the new RSA system doesn't protect against custom hardware. It was purely to prevent modified roms. The Cyclo DS iEvolution didn't last long. The company seemed to have vanished not long after that cart came out so it didn't see any long term support. It also lacked unlocked ARM7 access so it couldn't be used to take over the console so that you could modify the internal nand on the console to install any other exploits and what not. It was limited to just stuff that ran on slot1.

These days we now have exploits on the main console itself (as well as a leaked NTRBOOT RSA private key that exploited a backdoor reserved for the factory when they go to install the initial system software) to get full control. Plus there's now an open source flashcart that spoofs a leaked factory rom that had the unlocked arm7 SCFG settings required to do take over the system. Can also be used for ntrboot but that's story for another video maybe. :P

The R4 is the reason the DS is the best-selling Nintendo console ever, lol.

Gabe Newell mentioned that piracy is a service problem. It was just way more convienient to have a bunch of games, that were ready to play. Without having to swap cartridges.

I remember my first flash card setup for my DS was the supercard. You needed the slot 1card to run the roms off the sd that was on the GBA slot.

I still have mine for the ds, dsi and 3ds lol
