We are the original latinos, most Italians are descendants of the latin tribe who originated in central Italy, colonized the entire Italian peninsula and founded ancient Rome (which is why the Romans spoke Latin). Im more latina than hollywood "latinas" like Sofia Vergara, Selena Gomez etc who are a mix of Spaniards and Indigenous Americans. The correct answer is that we are both white and latino, the real latinos 🇮🇹

Technically, Italians are the true Latinos. But out of habit, we refer to Spanish-speaking people from the Americas.

Italians and Spanish are white Europeans. Latin was spoken in the Roman Empire and anywhere that has been in the Roman Empire that has traces of Latin culture and genetics can be referred to as Latin.
However, in modern usage "Latino/Latina " usually refers to someone from South or Central American or Mexico, who are indigenous mixed with European Spanish blood and have Spanish language. It's a very different bloodline from European Latin speakers.

I am Roman and I'm surprised that many people don't know history.
The only people in the world that are LATIN 100% for real are the people of LATIUM, LAZIO the region of Roma, since 3.000 years ago., that's where the word Latin comes from, and the real Latins are 100% white people, Italians.
Calling American people Latin is new, is a neologism invented 200 years ago to label the Americans than spoke languages of Latin origin such as Spanish and Portuguese,
for some strange reason the French Canadians have not been labeled Latins but they speak a Latin language,
English is also 60% latin.
Please learn your history everybody.

It's a little late to ask this question. Look at the statues of ancient Rome, and the subsequent portraits up to the present day.

Nothing to do with Latino, but what always bothered me was the stereotypes of Italians being dark skinned I suppose because of Sicily and the popular mafia movies. I would have people tell me you don’t look Italian, and my family came from Italy , Abruzzo my grandmother was light skinned had auburn hair and green eyes. Just a thought thank you for Posting very interesting.

Well, looking at the comments have been enlightening. I am born in South America from an Italian father and a Spanish mother(all grandparents from Spain) also born in South America, this makes my siblings and me latino Italians🤔

Depends on where in Italy the lineage flows. There were a people known as Latin, Italic, Oscan, Safinim, etc. But there is Germanic Lombard influence. Skandinavian-Norman (Germanic) influence and others. Therefore, today the Italians are genetic mix of many peoples united under one flag, Italy.

We were always counted as “white.” I saw my great great grandfather’s immigration records from 1890s and even back then, next to race there was a big W.
