At <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydfZqbfCYOU&t=157">2:37</a> You said the grounding rod becomes negatively charged. A grounding rod is connected to the ground which should neutralize any charge it interacts with. The grounding rod is placed near the positively charged sphere, it will be the source of electrons, from the ground, to neutralize the charge of on the sphere. The way it is described the grounding rod would have an equal but opposite charge to the Van de Graff's sphere and be a source of sparks too. (The grounding rod does not produce sparks when brought near uncharged objects.)
