Early electrostatic motors were pretty shocking, but these developments are positively exciting... I'll see myself out.

Check out Onshape for FREE: https://Onshape.pro/Ziroth - You won't regret giving it a try!

You missed one interesting property of Electrostatic motors; they can produce a static holding torque with minimal power consumption, which would be a great fit for actuators and servos used in robotics.

Adding fluid between such closely spaced disks creates a viscous coupling essentially. This will create so much drag at any meaningful speed. That's probably why they are focusing on torque.

It's nice to see someone doing something different here, but I wish they were open about both the positives and the drawbacks of the system, rather than just "prefer to talk about torque" and hide the actual reason under the rug.

This motor shouldn't rotate fast, because the insulating fluid would make bigger resistence. This is why they are focusing on torque, rather than on speed.

The one single thing an electrostatic motor can do that no magnetic motor can do is holding torque without power consumption. I think stepper motors would be a great application.

So much talk about rare minerals and the environment, and at the end we learn those new motors are primarily meant to replace asynchronous induction motors in conveyor belts, which don't use rare minerals nor permanent magnets anyway.

Electricity jumping through di-electrics is such a slap in the face of Engineering. Physics just doesn't love us like we love it.

I work in factory automation and induction motors are so cheap, these motors would have to get close to the ballpark upfront cost to start making a significant dent in the market. Unfortunately people don’t often go for the pay more now to save in future within the industry.

Dr Jeffimenko was my physics prof. I bought his book on ES motors. I'm glad to see materials have improved and these motors are getting interest again.
