I can't remember where I read it, but I recall a case from the early 18th Century where a woman was dragged in front of a rural magistrate by her neighbours and accused of being a witch. The 'evidence' was that she had been seen flying in the air. The magistrate, obviously not believing a word of it, dismissed the case on the grounds that flying wasn't illegal.

A group of misogynistic 'righteous' young men roaming around accusing any woman they wanted to humiliate and torture, operating with near-complete immunity, fills me with such rage.

I absolutely love your podcasts. I have been to Salem and the memorial to those who were murdered is so powerful. The power of women has always been seen as threatening...witness the devaluing of knowledge such as midwifery and use of folk medicine until the latter part of the 20th century

Did you know Helen Duncan (1897–1956), a Scottish medium and clairvoyant, was the last person to be imprisoned under the Witchcraft Act of 1735, convicted in 1944.
