Contrary to the widespread misconception that electric motors of EVs are less complex than petrol or diesel fueled motors of ICE-powered vehicles, the electric motors of EVs are in fact more complex than ICE-powered vehicles! That is because the electric motors of EVs contain a ‘liquid cooling’ system that circulates the ‘liquid coolant’ around the electric motor of an EV, which is susceptible to leakage into the electric components of the electric motor; and if only one seal fails, the electric motor is completely destroyed beyond repair.

Early detection of degradation of the seals (and also the bearings), inside electric motors of EVs is impossible without first the removal of the electric motor (together with the transmission and the differential), from the body to the EV, which is then followed by partial disassembly of the electric motor to inspect and replace the seals or bearings. This is a labor-intensive, and therefore, costly process—more than $1,000 for labor alone to remove the electric motor (together with the transmission and differential), and to partly disassemble the electric motor in order to access the seals and bearings, which is then followed by reassembly and installation of the said components—just to replace the seals or bearings that may cost less than $50.

Contrary to the misconception by some people, the drive trains of EVs are about ‘exactly the same’ in complexity as the drive trains of ICE-powered vehicles, all else being equal. For example, the additional complexity of the AWD mechanism of ICE-powered vehicles is exactly the same as the additional complexity of the AWD mechanism of EVs—the two are exactly the same!

The electronic ‘drive-by-wire’ system of some EVs (e.g., Tesla Cybertruck), eliminates the need for ‘physical’ components such as the rack-and-pinion steering mechanism, the steering arms, etc. However, the ‘electronic components’ of the ‘drive-by-wire’ system are highly susceptible to deterioration and damage, because they are operating in extremely harsh conditions (e.g., vibrations, heat, moisture, rapid changes of temperature, dusts, high potential for water ingress, etc).

Spontaneous and unexpected damage to only one (1) electronic component of the ‘drive-by-wire’ system has the potential for complete loss of control of the vehicle, which causes the vehicle to steer off its intended course; and which in turn has the potential to result in serious injury or death to people and damage to property. This has already been experienced by some operators of Tesla Cybertrucks, so the problem is not imagined, but it's real.

All EVs have a 'transmission' with mechanical gears and bearings, which require servicing and reconditioning every approximately 60,000 miles, which is not the case for the ‘hydraulic’ auto transmissions that can operate for 1 million (i.e., 1,000,000 miles), with only basic servicing (transmission fluid changes), every 100,000 miles.

Similarly, contrary to the widespread misconception, all EVs have about the same amount of 'mechanical' components (e.g., gears, bearings, ball joints, seals, etc), as ICE-powered vehicles. Due to greater labor time, and therefore, greater labor cost, some of these components and parts are far more costly to repair or replace, because in some instances, the entire electric motor, together with the transmission and differential, must first be removed from the body of an EV in order to replace a relatively inexpensive seal, bearing, motor mount, etc. In some instances, the electric motor also needs to be at least partly disassembled to replace a bearing or seal. Following the inspection and or relatively minor repairs or replacement of seals or bearings, the partly disassembled electric motor must then be reassembled, and together with the transmission and differential, it then needs to be reinstalled into the body of the EV—a highly labor-intensive, and therefore costly process.

The rubber (or rubber and metal), motor mounts on which the electric motor of an EV is secured, are prone to wear and tear which necessitates their replacement every approximately 60,000 miles. And that work requires the removal of the entire electric motor, transmission and differential assembly, from the body of the EV.

Even though the motor mounts for the electric motor of an EV are of very low cost (less than $50), however, due to the high ‘labor cost’ in removing and re-installing the electric motor, transmission and differential assembly from the body of the EV, replacing the motor mounts of EVs is very expensive—more than $1,000 for labor cost alone!

The misconception that the electric motor of EVs is simpler than the engine of ICE-powered vehicles, is not entirely true because the electric motors of EVs are far more complex than ‘ordinary’ electric motors—they are much more complex than the ‘giant’ and extremely powerful electric motors that power giant conveyor belts in high-speed manufacturing plants that process huge volumes of soil, rock and other minerals (e.g., iron ore). This is primarily because: –

• Unlike ordinary electric motors, the electric motors of EVs include a ‘liquid cooling’ system that is prone to leakage of the ‘liquid coolant’ into the electrical components of the electric motor, which in almost all instances cause catastrophic damage to the electrical motors of EVs;

• The electric motors of EVs are not stand-alone, but are fixed to the transmission and differential, which requires disassembly in order to open the electric motor for servicing and repairs; and

• Servicing or repairing electric motors of EVs (e.g., inspecting or replacing the seals or bearings), requires first the removal of the electric motor (together with the transmission and differential), from the body of an EV, and then reinstallation of these parts after the inspection or repair of the electric motor has been completed—a highly labor-intensive, and therefore, costly process.

Several aspects of EVs are highly complex and highly labor-intensive to service and repair. These particularly include but are not limited to: –

• The complex electric motor with a ‘liquid’ cooling system which is prone to leakage past the seals, and ingress into the ‘electrical’ components of the electric motor, which completely destroys the electric motor before the problem is detected;

• The highly complex main batteries of EVs, which require cooling by either the ‘air conditioning’ system of the EV, or the ‘liquid’ cooling system which is prone to leakage past the seals, and ingress into the ‘electrical’ components of the main battery, which completely destroys main batteries, or what is far worse, causes thermal runaway that results in explosions and fires of main batteries; and

• The multi-function touch screens, which due to exposure to high temperatures and vibrations, are prone to damage and rapid deterioration, not to mention the increased risk of vehicle collisions due to the driver needing to look at the screen for prolonged periods of time when scrolling and searching for a particular control on the touch screen.

The main batteries of EVs that are cooled by the air conditioner of the EV, must be operated whenever the electric motor is switched on, and which uses electrical energy from the main battery to operate, thereby reducing the driving range, particularly during high temperature climates. A large proportion of cool air from the air conditioning system of the EV must be diverted from the passenger compartment of the EV, to the main battery, which diminishes the ability for the air conditioning system to adequately cool the passenger compartment of the EV during high-temperature days, and thereby causing discomfort to the occupants of EVs.

The main batteries of the EVs that are cooled using a ‘liquid coolant’ circulating past the battery modules, are highly susceptible to damage if the seals at the interface of the liquid cooling system, and the multiple battery modules of the main battery compartment, deteriorate or are damaged. Unless the main battery unit of the EV is first removed from the body of the EV, and then its housing is opened for inspection, deterioration or damage of the said seals is impossible to detect prior to their failure. The removal of the main battery from the underside of the EV, and the opening of the housing of the main battery for inspection and repairs, is a highly labor-intensive process, and hence highly costly.

Contrary to the currently popular ‘myth’ that EVs are less complex than ICE-powered vehicles, the opposite is true!!! The long and the short of it is that EVs are far more complex than ICE-powered vehicles, which is the reason for the significantly greater cost to manufacture and maintain EVs.

From the environmental perspective, credible scientific studies on the ‘Life Cycle Assessments’ (LCAs), prove beyond a shadow of doubt, that for ‘every metric,’ EVs are much more polluting than the ICE-powered vehicles, by around 20% to more than 60%, depending on the particular metric!!!

So the widespread belief that EVs are less polluting to the environment is a fabricated myth!

The popular propaganda that the above-described problems of EVs will be solved by technological innovations, which is propagated by the manufactures of EVs, and also by EV zealots, climate crisis zealots, net-zero zealots, and the like, is a pipe dream—the complexity of electric motors of EVs, and especially the complexity and the dangers of the main batteries of EVs, will never be solved!

It's well past time for all unsuspecting and uninformed people, and the highly naive and gullible politicians and government bureaucrats, to wake up to the reality of owning and operating EVs. These people have been conned by the likes of Elon Musk who is the chief con artist!
