After 70, i find myself having two sleeps. Instead of fighting it, i get up do what i feel like doing, reading, sewing, watching something like this video. When i start to nod off i go back to bed. If i don’t sleep, i keep on with whatever i was doing. No big deal. It’s natural. What’s unnatural is memory foam. Terrible stuff.

Bed really is a luxury. We sleep on a carpeted floor on a blanket. It’s awesome in the summer but cold in winter 🥶 can’t wait to buy a bed

The history behind hard pillows and straw mattresses was surprisingly interesting. It's amazing how recently comfortable beds became normal.

The bed is not overrated. Even people in the ancient times had beds. Maybe they were made a bit different from our modern beds but they had beds. Yes kings and queens most likely had soft beds and pillows.

I remember feather-bed mattresses as a small child.

In the early 1980s there was an exhibition at the Smithsonian called "Treasurer Houses of Great Britain--500 years of private patronage". It was incredible--I had to go back twice because of data-overload.

There was a story that the curators had compiled a list of the items they wanted for the exhibit, including an eighteenth century state bed. They were at a stately home reviewing a different piece, and mentioned the search for the bed. The lady of the manor said that she thought they had one. After searching, they found the item in the attics--a gift from Queen Charlotte to a lady-in-waiting (?)--made by Thomas Chippendale and complete with the embroidered Chinese silk hangings--never unpacked! It was on display, but dimly lit to preserve the textiles.

Get linen sheets--they will cost you more but last FAR longer, and feel much better.
