My 200 year old farmhouse in northern Germany has a basement and most old houses in Germany do - to keep potatoes, coal, wine etc.Cellars are still normal. During WWII, they served as shelters from bombs.

The house where I grew up had a massive basement. It was always wonderfully cool. It had 5 rooms.

I love basements. Not sure if I would ever buy a house without a basement. We rented it out in every single house we were in and it covered 50-60% of the mortgage.

Another reason for basements was that many houses had gravity hot air heating systems. The furnace had to be in a basement so that the hot air could rise without a fan. Other houses had hot water heating systems with no circulation pump. The hot water furnace had to be below the level of the radiators. A similar situation existed with steam heat.

I am one of those 19,000,000 American homeowners with a basement. My first and current house was built in 2018 and it has a basement! I love it! The ceiling is tall and there is an egress window (a walk out window). I can work out in my basement, which I do, and I have a lot of storage space! I love my basement! The only negative is that it can flood if the sump pump is not on.

LEVIT TOWN PLACED THEIR FALL OUT SHELTERS IN THEIR BACK YARDS. BECAUSE IN LEVIT TOWN THEY HAD NO BASEMENTS. THATS WHY THEY COULD BUILD SO FAST.

A friend of mine house he inherited from his parents has a basement, because it used to have a coal bin in the house in the past and now it doesn’t ,and his parents used it for storage in their lifetimes, and now it’s mostly used for storage kinda.

I was blessed to be alive when my great great grandpa was alive. His home had one of those “chambers” that ran the distance of the home in both directions. I remember playing down there as a kid. We always called it the cave.

There is also a county park for camping nearby where there is Indian mounds. There is one of those “caves” made of brick walls at the park. Im guessing Indians did not make it because of the brick but instead a home sat above it at one point in time.
