  The old West was pretty temporary.  The cattle drives lasted 20 years.  The Pony Express only survived for 18 months.  The mining towns came and went very quickly.  The legend of the old West has been much more durable and long lasting than the actuality.

  Though not as gritty as cinema films, I would think "Lonesome Dove" would be fairly accurate for its general attitudes.

  My father was a ranch-hand as a teenager back in the mid 1920s. Older men at the end of their careers told him stories, as did his mother. I took him to see Unforgiven a year before he died. When we came out of the theatre he looked at me and said, "That's the most accurate western you're ever going to see". For context, his mother (my grandmother) was born one year before the shootout at the OK Corral.

  My favorite gunfight, was Buster Scruggs.  He takes off his hat, sees the hole dead center where his forehead would be, and just says "well, that can't be good"   😆

  The way Gene Hackman describes the claim to fame of English Bob was probably the closest to a actual gun fight. Lucky shots and drunk shootouts that accidentally made a individual a legendary gunfighter with legend growing with each retelling additives.

  Ya, I think Pale Rider with Clint Eastwood was much more realistic when it came to big industry trying to steal from the ordinary miners and small prospecting towns.

  I agree with all of the films presented, however, I believe my favorite depiction of the real west was portrayed in the mini series Lonesome Dove.
