If you got a tornado warning forty minutes early and a siren twenty minutes early, would you assume you were going to be all right?<br><br>That is what happened in Greensburg, Kansas on May fourth, two thousand seven. The forecast was early, the sirens ran, a broadcaster in Wichita stayed on the air, and people went down into their basements because of it. Twelve people died, far fewer than the emergency managers in that county were preparing for. And ninety five percent of the town was still destroyed, because the tornado was one point seven miles wide and the town was about the same size.<br><br>The warnings were world class. The buildings were not. If you live somewhere that gets these storms, tell me the one thing you would grab with twenty minutes to spare.<br><br>If this is the first time you have heard about Greensburg, subscribe.
