The sheer ineptitude of all 3 Carthaginian generals (2 of them brothers) to not take Scipio seriously after the capture of New Carthage is astounding. I cannot see that happening under Hannibal's watch. Hannibal really carried Carthage on his back. Hamilcar Barca would have been immensely disappointed with Hasdrubal Barca and to a lesser extent, Mago Barca.

As excellent a general Scipio was, his task was made far easier than it should have been. Ibreia was essentially the Barca's own backyard having been there for 20 years. They got absolutely embarrassed and spanked.

This is the most unapreciated part of the punic war ngl. It's really really good and really entertaining. Also proves Scipio was a better general

22:48 This is a huge deal, IMO. The Roman armies were pretty amateurish before, to be honest. Legions were raised, campaigned for a season, then disbanded. Particularly for taking over the Italian peninsula, everything was close to home. Military leaders weren't professional. It took time on long campaigns to be good.

The Second Punic War went for 17 years and was a deadly tool that sharpened the Roman army. The teacher was Hannibal and failure in his military school meant death on the battlefield for the Romans. Many Romans failed the course. There were a lot of very overly aggressive Roman officers and Hannibal happily destroyed them. When the Second Punic War ended in 201 BC, the Roman army that emerged from it was razor freaking sharp. The troops were experienced. Military leaders had wartime experience dealing with the likes of Hannibal.

When Rome was involved with the Hellenic world much more, particularly for the Second Macedonian War of 200-196 BC, there was no stopping them. The army and its leadership was still too good and Rome was coming out of the Second Punic War with momentum.

At first, I thought this was an upload I missed from Historia Civilis. Upon clicking, I was shocked to find such a small channel with such insane depth. I’m excited to catch up on all your videos!

This video was incredibly good! These wars were incredibly brutal, the spanish were fiercely loyal to the Barcids, I believe Hannibal's father was a sort of sun king to them. Hannibal to the Spanish was Caesar to the Gauls, it was a majorly disruptive campaign. Very interesting, very well researched, and very detailed! You did a great job! Anyone who dislikes the animations has absolutely no clue how to use their imaginations or how to extrapolate.
