The real Victorian transport revolution wasn’t speed. It was geography becoming class structure. Once railways let wealthier workers live farther from the centre, commuting started separating where Londoners earned money from where they could afford to live. (That relationship between infrastructure and the shape of places is exactly what I keep disappearing into on my own channel.) The Underground wasn’t simply solving congestion. It helped create the modern idea of London itself, with suburbs effectively manufactured by transport.

I feel for these horses galloping these wet slippery cobblestone roads with truckloads of materials, people behind you day in day out. Such roads where not meant for horses. I bet they did not survive longer then a few years.
