I can read or listen to accounts of the Romano-Karthaginian conflict over and over again. What I did not know, and found very interesting, is the status of their colonies and whether we can call Karthagina an empire before the First Punic War.

What makes it a true empire before the war with Rome is the imposition of its sovereignty by force. Carthage imposed strict trade treaties on other powers (including Rome itself in early treaties). Under these agreements, foreign ships were prohibited from sailing or trading in certain areas such as the western Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, and the Carthaginian fleet would sink any ship that breached this monopoly.

Thank you so much! Recently discovered this channel and am learning so much! My favourite countries are the ones that are less-well-known in Europe, like the Sea People, Persia, the Hittites... Objectively, it's so eye-opening to hear what a big role the Mediterranean islands played in international politics! And subjectively, I soooo understand the suffering that followed in Sicily after the "letters of invitation"... "Letters of invitation" to foreign powers are some of the worst things that happen in the humankind. It's like inviting a fire to your neighbour's house, not realizing it will also consume your own.

Very interesting. The old ofical story always struck me as very unlikely. Rome having no ships suddenly outdoing a naval power at sea etc.
