I can feel a great sympathy for Mr. Eliot with regards to his poor wife's mental illness. It can be very frightening at times, especially for loved ones who knew the sufferer in better times. I do hope Vivien wasn't given ECT at the nursing home. My poor Mum was given that barbaric treatment at the age of 27 to jolt her, literally, out of deep depression after the sudden death of my young brother at 5. Mum ended up suffering from epilepsy for the rest of her life. I feel for them both. His poetry isn't always easy, but The Waste Land is one of only two books of poetry I own.

All parts of Arena Portrait are very interesting, giving me much insight into what he accomplished and what he believed in, giving him direction in his life and creative abilities that became so vast..

He never recovered from the grief for his lover Jean Verdenal (during time at the Sorbonne), who was killed in WW1 ‘aux Dardanelles’.

Absolutely wonderful documentary. This episode’s focus on Eliot’s love of silence (both inner and outer) at its ending, and the commentary given, is wonderful indeed.

It is this love of inner peace that attracts me the most to his work, and although I am not into established religions or belief systems in a believer’s way, I do respect them in a similar way that he did: as attempts to capture and/or convey transcendent reality.

However vain (and possibly misleading) such institutional attempts are, at the same time they can indeed provide an interesting and relaxing “home turf” to savor and celebrate that transcendental reality.

On the negative side, institutions can end up dividing and confusing people with their “authority” and their “dogmas.”

Eliot's assumption that religions evolved in Eastern cultures were untranslatable to Western contexts is a profound misunderstanding of a religion like Buddhism, the Buddha's message and path meant to apply to all sentient beings everywhere at any time.
