  Honestly, as a Japanese person, I think ramen is really free and people should absolutely do their own interpretations of it. Ramen itself has roots in Chinese noodle dishes like tangmian and lamian, then evolved into its own thing in Japan.<br><br>So sure, there can be Chinese ramen, French ramen, Italian ramen, whatever. That’s part of the fun.<br><br>I guess my only feeling is that Chinese noodles are already amazing in their own right, and if Black cuisine has its own distinct noodle traditions too, I’d love seeing those celebrated as themselves as well, not only framed through ramen.

  actually ramen is literally chinese hand pulled noodles. &nbsp;Japanese copied it in the early 1900s and then modified it with local touch. &nbsp;I would say there quite a few places in NYC which specialize in Lanzhou Lamian or ramen.

  Historically speaking, it&apos;s pretty undisputed the direct ancestor/predecessor to modern ramen is the earliest forms of what is called &quot;chuukasoba&quot; -- meaning literally, &quot;Chinese noodles&quot; -- that gained popularity in Japan with the influx of foreign trade and Chinese merchants around the 1900s. Of course, from that point on it became its own thing in Japan to become the modern ramen we enjoy and love... so it&apos;s a surprisingly modern invention.<br><br>Not to mention, the scope and creativity of ramen has evolved to the point that it&apos;s really difficult to pinpoint the definition of what &quot;ramen&quot; is. The &quot;classic&quot; style demands noodles of wheat+water+alkaline, &nbsp;broth+tare and garnish.. but since then there&apos;s so many varieties of ramen that change around some, or all of the 3 classic ocmponents into something else entirely... so, as long as the taste profile and stuff works nicely, I find no problems in &quot;Black ramen&quot; or &quot;Chinese ramen.&quot; I mean, a ramen shop could serve a dish that resembles more of a pasta than a classic ramen, but if they proclaim it&apos;s their brand of new ramen.. there&apos;s not really a way to object it. Like tsukemen? Is that a ramen? Is aburasoba a ramen? Both those resemble nothing of the classic ramen but all the ramenshops call it a type of ramen. The Japanese themselves accept it as ramen. So there&apos;s no strict standard to talk of in the first place unless we specify &quot;the classic style.&quot; <br><br>So long as it doesn&apos;t degrade itself to what the ramen enthusiasts call &quot;gimmick ramen&quot; or &quot;tourist ramen,&quot; of course.

  There is a reason why Ramen is written in katakana in Japanese ラメン. That is because it is a loan word from the chinese Lamian (拉麵). &quot;La&quot; (拉) means to pull or stretch, and &quot;mian&quot; (麵/面) means noodle or dough, describing a technique dating back to 1504 that requires significant skill to create long, elastic strands.

  The black guy basically just made nilagang baka with noodles. Nilagang baka is a Filipino beef stew, it has potatoes, &quot;saba&quot; banana, string beans

  Using instant noodle noodles for your noodle dishes is a very authentic at-home cooking Chinese thing to do, I know this because a lovely Chinese couple rents in the same apartment building I am and I always see them cooking in the communal kitchen using instant noodle bricks in their cooking; they give me any of the spice packets they don&apos;t use because I told them I like to put them into an &quot;mixed spices&quot; container that I use to season my freeze-died trail foods to give flavor back since those can be a bit bland without seasoning and it is more interesting than just some salt and pepper.

  I think the two black cooks misunderstood the assignment in this one. Or at the very least had a different interpretation. There’s plenty of black and southern food that could be used for inspiration.
