  Back in the 90's when I lived in San Diego while fishing at a local lake I met an old WW2 vet who served on U-boats.  He said they really feared allied airpower and the hedgehog depth bombs.  He said that his sub was brought to the surface by a homing torpedo dropped by a PBY.  They had never heard of it before their soundman became frantic that they were being tracked by a torpedo. The commander knew it was the end and called for an emergency surface and abandon ship.  The torpedo hit seconds after they broke the surface.  They were rescued by a US destroyer and he worked a farm in Texas.  He loved how he was treated in the US and chose to stay in the US eventually marrying one of the daughters of the farmer he worked for.  He served 6 years in the USN in San Diego's ASW center and he chose to retire in San Diego.  When he found out I was a USN vet he smiled and said to never take this country for granted.

  For all of those complaining about in correct film footage, please remember that actual footage from this time is extremely limited.

  My dad was a midshipman on Suffolk during the battle of the Denmark strait. Barely 18. Never did speak about it much but then he died while I was barely much older than he was during that action. Brave men.

  18 torpedo tubes on the type 21 u-boat? i dont think so, more likely 18 torpedoes in its munitions

  I am in the middle of season 1 of Das Boot, on Hulu. I don&apos;t ever think I been more impressed with a series. I&apos;m biased as I&apos;m a huge history fan. The show really brings the war to your living room in a way no one has done. I was looking to watch the movie from the 80&apos;s. I was very impressed. <br>Showing the war from the German point of view and the French Resistance is what they did in such a great way. I was even pleased to see they not only completed one season, there is season 2 and 3. If I can&apos;t find a way to stream it, I&apos;ll just buy the seasons. It&apos;s that good. <br>For those who haven&apos;t been aware I would highly rcommend it. It&apos;s not specifically about exact story they just bring you in U-612. You get to see the Enigma machine at work. No lie I have not slept in two days.

  I think B-24&apos;s , PBY Catalinas and Sunderland flying boats operating from bases in the US East Coast, Canadian Maritimes, Iceland, the Azores and from the UK helped tremendously cut the coverage gap against U-Boats. It was the arrival of the escort carrier that finally closed that gap.

  Many ships were lost on the English east coast. &nbsp; E-boats are not mentioned, but they were a serious menace which small MGBs couldn&apos;t match.
