Operation Paukenschlag, Rheinhardt Hardigen of U123, he and his entire crew survived the war. He was known for letting a crew abandon ship on lifeboats when he detected that was occurring.

The best torpedo till '44 was still the long Lance, with range of over 10000 yards, higher speed and greater accuracy. Furthermore the long Lance was oxygen fuelled, so the torpedo wake was virtually invisible.<br>The early war US Torpedo was horrible in detonation contact and accuracy issue.<br>Time and time again the US Torpedo would strike, the fuses failed to ignite. This issue was taken care of finally by early 44, when the entire fuse system was converted to electrical instead of contact, at expense of range.

Well, this documentary did mention a little more than 1000 German submarines were produced during the war. However, there were never thousands of u boats. The number produced was however very impressive. German technology was ahead for its time.

The Flower Class anti-submarine corvette was taken from existing pre-war whaling ships from England.

Best remedy was that the merchant ships should have been provided and fitted with sonar equipment, depth charges, torpedoes, guns, and other antisubmarine equipment to take care of the german submarine threat. The allies never had enough destroyers to escort the merchant ships so the best solution was to arm the merchant ships with anti-submarine gear. The merchant ship convoys were huge with many ships sailing together, when they would have attacked the submarines together it would have hit the Germans very hard. I am surprised that this idea did not came up in to the minds of allied admirals.
