When chairs didn't exist, even wheelchairs didn't exist. People had to use their legs.

Still doesn't answer the question why? Walk around the whole day or just sit until some unlucky food pass by.

Sure, I'll be the one to address the elephant in the room. It's called evolution. The human body can wear out. It needs periods of rest. There is a reason the life expectancy of early humans was only about 20 - 30 years just as recently as 300 - 500 years ago. In addition to being harsh, with accessibility to food being uncertain, life evolved around being alert. Watch animals hunt today and see what makes their prey vulnerable. Hunters exploit times of vulnerability in their prey. Early humans were just as likely the prey as they were the hunter. But evolution happens. For the first thousands of years of evolution, the human body needed to be ready to move on short notice to survive. But evolution happens. The human body no longer relies on the need to be able to spring into action and therefore has the ability to rest for longer periods of time.....and we also live for about 80 years in most modern societies. That is the trade-off. Keep your body up and in motion (say like a construction worker, or a coal miner), and see how long you live before your body breaks down and gives out. Now imagine you are born into a wealthy family where you have access to leisure time, medical care, proper nutrition, and compare the life expectancy. There is a trade off between rest and being able to keep the human body in the state of a professional athlete.

Having said all of that, remaining sedentary for too long is detrimental to the human body. I have a friend who insists that it is impossible to over-feed the human body and yet obesity is prevalent in most modern societies. I have burned 10,000 - 12,000 calories per day when exercising vigorously (cross-country bicycling). I watched about the first 5 - 8 minutes of this video and didn't really find much value in it. Maybe if you fast forwarded to the part where the human body starts to evolve and life expectancy starts to increase, it might be more realistic.
