Since I was young, I wondered how they calibrated the hole to get the sand to flow at the correct rate for the amount of time. Today I learned they don't; they calibrate the <b>sand</b> to take the correct amount of time.

I've watched enough glass making and craft videos to have suspected in advance that this is exactly how they are made and yet, I watched the entire video with rapt attention. A dedicated and experienced craftsman is always captivating. Well made video as well.

Used to work at a company that made photomultiplier tubes. Up until about the early 80’s the tubes were hand blown from glass and assembled by specialist technicians. Really impressive as these were axial Venetian blind types that needed fairly precise alignment of the grids and stages, and had windows up to about 60mm in diameter. And they used downhole in the oilfield no less! No comfy laboratory experiments for these.
