Now you have to watch Weathering With You to figure out what happens with Taki and Mitsuha

I'm not sure that this qualifies as a hidden gem, but it is a damn good movie.

17:24 It's visual storytelling. Mitsuha sleeps on a futon she's not used to the elevated bed so when we see Taki rolling and falling off his bed we know it's Mitsuha in his body 😊
Same thing with the Hair. When Mitsuha wears a simple ponytail, we know it's Taki in her body because he can't do her neat, 2 braids, ribbon hairstyle lol

The red cord is a reference to an asian legend: a red ribbon connects soul mates to each other. The director is famous in Japan for sad endings, this was a sort of revelation. In his next film Mitsuha and Taki appears togerher in a cameo

The read thread holds a lot of meaning also. Its part of asian legend. The red thread connects people destined to be together.

Watching this before and after learning Japanese has been fun.

Something I noticed about the shrine family. The grandma name is hitoha
Mothers name is futaba
Oldest sister is mitsuha
Youngest sister is yotsuha

Their names are all spelt with the kanji number and then leaf (ha, but pronounced different for one or two).
So they are doing some pattern. If she has a daughter her name would be itsuha
