  You are correct! Their memories were what they had to give up in exchange for returning from the underworld. And it's a good thing Taki wrote "I love you" instead of his name, or it would have vanished, too. In Japanese lore, confessions of love are protected by the moon god and not bound by any other laws. That's why Mitsuha still had his message on her hand.

  The stairway they met at the end of the movie is a real stairway in Tokyo and because of the movie. It's a very popular spot for people to propose now

  He forgets her name very easily because it's literally like a dream, when you wake up just after seconds you instantly forget the details of the dream, but usually you remember the feeling.

And the first two are mostly used by women. It’s a joke you can’t really translate well because of the language barrier. But I&apos;m glad you guys still enjoyed the movie!

  The god the grandma mentioned protects messages of love, that’s why Taki was allowed to write ‘I love you’ but when Mitsuha was gonna write her name (since it’s not a message of love) the connection got broken

  To answer some questions, yes Musubi is a real concept in Japanese culture, usually in the Shinto religion to signify bonds between people or things. But it literally means &quot;to tie&quot; or &quot;to connect&quot; in Japanese. It can also be seen in words like &quot;musume&quot; (daughter) and &quot;musuko&quot; (son) as they are connected to their parents and spiritually connected to the gods.<br><br>Yes mitsuha&apos;s rice spit is a real thing lol. It&apos;s one of the most ancient forms of sake production, using the enzymes in saliva to ferment the rice and turn it into a sweet alcohol. Usually performed by shrine maidens as offering to the gods like they did.<br><br>Yes, the braided rope is a thing that exists in shintoism. You can especially see them at Japanese shinto shrines, you&apos;ll see big ones above torii gates (called shimenawa). It represents the division between the &quot;god&apos;s space&quot; within the shrine and the &quot;normal world&quot; outside. But also signifies where humans can connect with the divine. The smaller braids like the ones they make in the film are called kumihimo which can symbolize time, love, and connection.<br><br>Fun fact! The generation of women in mitsuha&apos;s family all share a common thread in their names. Mitsuha means 3 leaves. Yotsuha (her sister) means 4 leaves. Their mom&apos;s name was Futaba (2 leaves) and grandma&apos;s name is Hitoha (1 leaf), showing that they are all connected, branching off the same family tree. And also that they all go through the same body swap experience. The dad even mentions &quot;insanity&quot; in mom&apos;s family showing that he probably wasn&apos;t aware of the truth, or at least didn&apos;t believe it.<br><br>The movie also underlines one of Japan&apos;s favorite themes of impermanence and trying to hold on to precious things that disappear. It&apos;s a beautiful concept that promotes gratitude and appreciation for the &quot;now&quot;. <br><br>So glad you guys liked this one! It&apos;s one of my favorites because of how beautifully it shows and explains key Japanese cultural aspects and beliefs. The way they see life is unique and so lovely.
