I wonder if the sand has diatomaceous earth in it. I know that stuff can mess up bugs pretty badly.

I'm pretty confident that the issue was the sharp edged sand.<br>The dark brown spots are normal, you might not notice it that much on black soil.

Btw the reason they were reacting to the soil was pockets of gasses released from anaerobic bacteria in the sand. The play sand you used was too compacted. The aquarium sand will be bigger grains. Also the deeper the substrate layer the more anaerobic spots you will have.
