One of my favourite players to watch. Was more interesting back then with the base line vs serve volley

Hate that this is an AI video, even though it’s very well done.

One of the dead giveaways that this is A.I. is when the narrator says “I was happy when Goran finally won Wimbledon in 2001, years after I retired.”

Pete retired after the 2002 us open. Lol

Miss growing up in the 90s. Watching all these on tv and in person at rod Laver arena many times . RIP the serve and volley era 🙌❤

This is an AI video, but I will give them credit for picking up on a crucial element of Pete Sampras's game. His second serve, it was the best I've ever seen and to me maybe the single biggest reason he won so many tournaments; I can't count all the times Pete was down break point on a second serve and the second serve was an ace. Two serves later he'd go from being on the brink of going down a break to winning the game or winning the set. It was the most uncanny thing he had to always pull out monster second serves in big moments; and according to this video that was due to his many matches with Andre Agassi, who is generally regarded as the best return of serve player ever.

His serve was a work of art

And Sampras did all of it with old school Wilson racquets with like 85 sq in head, and strung to 79 lbs. Which is unfathomably tight stringing. In addition to that he kept the racquets in a cooler by the court which made them...even tighter. CRAZY. He was one the worst jobs for a stringer because they would break so many strings just stringing the racquets at that tension. The frame he used was VERY heavy, and probably why his forearms were so huge.
No player today would ever really choose or be able to use that frame. Generating pace with those strings and that frame...well he had to be a serious brute. And even with the ultra-small head size he still never really framed it or mishit which is nuts.

Pete Sampras sure had "his moments" ... and then some! Fabulous player for all time. I will never forget that 1990 US Open quarter final against Ivan Lendl which I went to see in person. Well before cell phones where a thing. He has been my all-time favorite player. Bar none.

I followed Pete's entire career even though I was a big Jim Courier/Andre Agassi fan. At his prime, Pete was unbeatable, his serve is too me the best of all times, his forehand was huge too and his volley was incredible. Yes, some players serve faster/stronger nowadays, but Pete's 1st and 2nd serves were so consistent, unreadable, Sampras was so good at serving big on key points...although it happened on rare occasions for him to be 0/40 down, it looked as if he could not lose his serve, and to be honest, I've never had this feeling again with anyone else, Roger included. I wish Pete hadn't retired at 31, he could have one 1 or 2 Wimbledon more, but he finished in style by beating his greatest rival at the US Open. His 14 GS titles record was I thought, unbeatable, but another 3 monsters of the game were knocking at the door...
I wish he could have won Roland Garros, he was close in 1996 by reaching the semis, but he was exhausted and lost to Kafelnikov. Clay was not for Pete, especially on rainy/windy days...
Pete Sampras, if you read me, it's been an absolute priviledge and honour to see you play and become the immense champion that you are, you're definitely part of the big four. We miss you and we would love to see more often during the slams or the Masters 1000 taking place in the US, but we understand that your life was exposed enough all those years and that you're enjoying your private life far from the cameras today. All the best to you and your lovely family Pete.

The serve was the knockdown blow and the volley was the boot on your neck.
