  Fun fact: Brazil&apos;s capital, Brasília, was built in the heart of the Cerrado. Where I live we can see macaws and cars at the same time (which sounds good, but I could do without the cars, and I bet the macaws could as well)

  For everyone: one million hectares = 10 000 km2 = about the size of jamaica. it&apos;s nothing compared to what&apos;s been lost, but it&apos;s still a mindboggling insane undertaking, and the people who work for this are heroes of the human species.

  As a retired Forester who has followed restoration projects closely during the recent past, it seems that starting with trees results in failure more often than one would think. There are a lot of projects around the world that start at the lower end of the &quot;plant chain&quot; and succeed by creating the conditions that allow pioneer species to flourish, thereby mimicking the succession pattern that occurs in natural forests.
