How do you grow trees in a treeless land?

  A handful of my neighbors have planted new trees in the past 7 years, and the birds have come back. I love hearing them sing in the morning.

  My mate purchased a semi-arid property that had been grazed for over 100 years. The land was so useless and degraded the farmer sold it as it was no longer productive. My friend fenced it off and planted over 3,000 trees. His neighbors laughed at him and told him nothing would grow. 6 years later, he has trees 20 feet high. Wildlife has returned. Now,  native grasses, trees, and shrubs are regenerating everywhere. It's like an oasis in an area where nearly every tree has been cleared for grazing and wheat.

  I live in the Pittsburgh area where steel used to reign. I became aware of a butterfly that disappeared from my city about a hundred years ago.the butterfly is the zebra swallowtail and its host plant is the pawpaw tree which used to be common. I have been working on restoring the pawpaw to post industrial sites to allow the zebra swallowtail to permanently return. And I am getting some positive results.

  my daughter was born last year and I planted two apple trees in her honor. I only have a small city yard but I figured I could do what I can.

  They face the same issue as the Scottish Highlands, any attempt to reforest is blocked by grazing sheep or business interests.<br>We all think of the Highlands as moors and pasture, it was once a thriving forest ecosystem. Reintroducing predators will help reduce the deer prevalence and return of forests.<br>Lots of work to be done to restore the balance.

  Similar example. I’m German, the aunt of my wife married an US army soldier. They ended up in Nevada/US in a town that is quite in the desert. She love gardening and started to plant trees. Her property is lush and green and the trees are tall and shady. On our last visit AC was not needed the trees provided enough shade to keep the house cool. Btw, she does not have a pristine lawn around the house either. But a lot of birds and butterflies.

  I&apos;m glad they are replanting the forests of Iceland... acting for their grandchildren&apos;s grandchildren. I could wish to see this happening all across the world... a hope and a prayer in every tree planted.

  This reminds me of a story from my school days: A king once saw a old man planting a mango tree and asked, “Why plant it when you may never taste its fruit?” The old man replied, “I plant it for posterity.” The king realized that not everything we do is for ourselves — some acts are gifts to the future — and rewarded him.

  I didn&apos;t see my pal Derek in the video, but he was there all the same planting trees, slugging it out with the cold and wet. I&apos;m proud of him and the work he did there.

  It&apos;s never too late to plant trees. You may not see them grow to full maturity, but you will see them grow. &nbsp;My garden is full of dozens of trees we have planted. &nbsp;Some twenty years ago, now fully mature.
