The story is true, we did not lay down that flag and bend a knee to Britain. We fought for that flag. A lot of men gave their lives for that flag. The forefathers believed in a free nation. A nation for one and nation for all. The flag represents the citizens not the government.

THIS STORY IS FULL OF LIES. This is nothing but the attempt of some right-wing nationalist to play on your emotions as he presents a false narrative of events. He starts out referring to America as "colonies". That means he doesn't even know this incident took place during the War of 1812. There were no women nor children in Fort McHenry. The Great Garrison Flag (Star-Spangled Banner) which flew ...During the bombardment of Fort McHenry on September 13–14, 1814, a smaller 17x25 foot "storm flag" likely flew, not the massive 30x42 foot "Star-Spangled Banner" garrison flag. The smaller flag was used during the heavy rain and actual battle, while the large garrison flag was hoisted at dawn on September 14 to signal victory. The actual battle flag has been lost to history, the one on display at the Smithsonian did not fly during the actual battle but was raised the following morning.

No bodies held the flag pole up nor anything else. During the 25-hour bombardment of Fort McHenry on September 13–14, 1814, only 4 Americans were killed and 24 were wounded. Despite the British firing 1,500–1,800 bombs and rockets, the fort's defenses held firm, resulting in remarkably low casualties for the American garrison.

The quote he attributes to George Washington is a lie. "I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees." was said by. Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, not George Washington. Nowhere during that war did British troops bombard a fort full of women and children. Key couldn't have heard a word on the British ship during the battle because he wasn't on that ship. Even had he been on that ship, it would be impossible to hear anything other than the sound of cannon fire during a bombardment. Use common sense to ferret out lies people.

Here's what really happened: For starters, Key was seeking the release of only one prisoner. September 13, 1814, British warships sent a downpour of shells and rockets onto Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor, relentlessly pounding the American fort for 25 hours. The bombardment, known as the Battle of Baltimore. There only about 20 British ships.

Francis Scott Key, an American lawyer, had boarded the flagship of the British fleet on the Chesapeake Bay in hopes of getting the British to release a friend who had recently been arrested. Key was successful, but because he and his companions had gained knowledge of the impending attack on Baltimore, the British did not let them go. They allowed the Americans to return to their own vessel but continued guarding them. Under their scrutiny, Key watched on September 13 as the barrage of Fort McHenry began eight miles away. He wrote about the battle he witnessed.

We are still a young country with a complex from not having the long history of other countries so we tend to be braggadocios when it comes to our history and usually exaggerate or just plain lie about the facts.

This story as told in the video is full of false information. On September 12, 1814, 5,000 British soldiers and a fleet of 19 ships attacked Baltimore. 100 cannons and more than 10,000 regular troops defended the American line. The defenses were far stronger than the British anticipated. There is no historical evidence suggesting the British explicitly told the defenders of Fort McHenry that the bombardment would cease if they lowered the flag, according to the U.S. National Park Service. The bombardment of Fort McHenry was part of a larger British strategy to attack Baltimore, and the flag was a symbol of American resistance, not a specific condition for ending the attack, according to the U.S. National Park Service. The British ultimately withdrew after their naval forces failed to penetrate the harbor defenses.

The attack on Fort McHenry was a key part of the larger Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. The British aimed to capture Baltimore, and the fort, guarding the entrance to the city's harbor, was a major obstacle. The bombardment lasted for 25 hours and was intended to weaken the fort's defenses before a potential ground assault.

The flag flying over Fort McHenry, a large garrison flag, was not the flag that flew throughout the actual battle the previous night, became a powerful symbol of American resilience after the British bombardment. The sight of the flag still flying after the intense barrage inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner," which later became the national anthem in 1931. The flag was a symbol of American resistance and resolve, not a condition for the cessation of hostilities.

The British ultimately withdrew because they were unable to breach the fort's defenses or navigate the harbor. The strong American fortifications and the failure of their naval attack led to the end of the bombardment and the British retreat.

This video (the original) should be banned - he gets almost this entire story wrong. First of all, they weren't "the colonies" anymore - America had been a country for almost 40 years already. He doesn't even get the name of the fort right. It was Fort McHenry, not Fort Henry (which is in Tennessee). The British only had 19 ships there, not "the entire British war fleet". Francis Scott Key was only trying to get one person released, a friend of his, not a group of prisoners. He wasn't on any British war ship, he was on an American truce ship, and no - there were no prisoners below decks. Also, the fort held 1000 soldiers in defense of it, not mostly women and children. The British attack did very little damage to the fort - that's why the British fleet left in the morning. There weren't a pile of patriot bodies holding up the flagpole...the U.S. only lost four soldiers in the battle. The flag Francis Scott Key saw the next morning wasn't the shredded flag from the battle - it was a large replacement flag flown so the British could see it, as a message. I don't know why this guy thought he needed to add so much BS to an already good story.
