I saw When Harry Met Sally in the theater with my male friend when we were 19. We'd been friends over a year, and it was just a month after I'd broken up with someone I'd dated for a year. I remember squirming at the "men and woman can't be friends" line. I was pretty sure I was in love with my friend, but I wasn't sure how he felt about me. Within a week or so, we were dating. We're now married with two adult kids. This movie is extra special to me.

I watched this movie for the first time this year. In a world where rom coms typically take place within months, or even only weeks or days, it was a breath of fresh air to watch a movie where it took YEARS to build their relationship. Instantly became my favorite rom com of all time!

Fun Fact: Director Rob Reiner had been divorced from his first wife, Penny Marshall, who was also a famous actor and director, for almost a decade prior to making the movie. It was initially scripted that Harry and Sally go their separate ways. But while the filming was happening, he met the woman who would become his second wife, Michele Singer Reiner, and he changed the ending to them getting their happy ending. They married in 1989, the same year this film was released.<br>Rest in Peace, Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner, we lost you both far too soon. 😔🕊️💔

I really feel like Billy Crystal was robbed of an Oscar nomination tbh he played a male love interest in a romantic comedy that I haven’t ever seen repeated, but the one thing that I really love about how he plays Harry is that there really isn’t any big dramatic character shift or change to his character he just becomes slightly more aware of himself until he has a natural moment of clarity

I love this movie. Just realized that there's a gender flip in here too- usually men are the ones who hold in all their emotions until they all come out at once. Harry is the one talking about his emotions a lot of the time. Sally is the one that holds back until it all comes out.

Jess and Marie are my favourite side characters in rom coms. Unlike Harry and Sally, it doesn't take them too long to realise their feelings, and they easily compromise, such as the tacky wagon wheel coffee table. Some of my favourite moments are when they jump into a taxi, when he tells her "You'll never have to be out there again", and when Jess throws out the table. Rest in Peace, Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher.

I loved the little interviews with the elderly couples reaccounting how they met interspersed throughout the movie. These were real stories, though performed by actors.

Although the famous question is whether men and women can be friends without sex ruining everything, the fact that Harry and Sally were friends before falling in love shows that friendship before romance is the key to a strong relationship. They already knew each other for over a decade before getting married, so were familiar with each others' quirks.

The argument between Harry and Sally that results in Harry saying, "Can I say something? I'm sorry." reminds me so much of my arguments with my wife. We argue but it almost NEVER lasts beyond the timeframe of the argument, because we get things out of our system, and then we allow ourselves a few moments to cool off, and either I'll make a joke or she will, and we're suddenly back to laughing and saying, "I hear you, I understand your side, I just want you to know where I'm coming from" and we move on after acknowledging one another's point of view and feelings about a given issue.

"You made a woman meow?!"<br><br>Great directing from Rob Reiner; but, credit is especially due to the screenplay<br><br>Nora Ephron is an incredible writer and this script really is something else here.
