This is basically the opposite of "he knew nothing and made a game!" nonsense you get on youtube a lot.

I feel this. I've worked as a 3D artist professionally for 20 years and now that I started making games, even with very little programming knowledge, the skills I got from my background are definitely coming into play in all kinds of areas: design, composition, complexity, programming logic, art. It's much different than starting from scratch.

As a carpenter you usually go through a training phase, known as apprenticeship. I think we really should adopt that idea into game dev. There is a learning phase. By the end of it, you can build something much better than you could before.

Not only is it ALL of the art, it is also ALL of the computer science. Outside games programming I hardly ever use a floating point variable, and certainly not a 4x4 transformation matrix. Games involve 3D rendering, physics simulation, statistics, concurrency, network sockets, and much more.

Whether you suck and are a moron or not, you are actually DOING it. That already has gotta put you in the top 1% of badasses!

I clicked on this thinking it was going to be bad but that I should give you the benefit of the doubt. Glad I did. Because this just encouraged me even more to work on my game Ideas.

Started with music in high school, never had a dollar to spend on studio time so I taught myself how to do it and use all those tools. Years later, lost my job as director at a non-profit because of covid, and took the skills I learned recording music to learn video editing which is what I do full time now. I'm realizing those video editing skills will be so valuable once I get a game to posting time now. Life is crazy and weaving all the skills you pick up along the way is crucial.

I think about this all the time. I'm an artist in the games industry,, and I'm constantly seeing people who make me want to Billy Madison Grab Them By The Cheeks and Shake Their Head and say, "THE SLOW WAY IS THE FAST WAY"

Trying to chart the perfect path of bare minimum actions required to get to your goal is like trying to get as high as you can by stacking chairs. It'll work for well enough to convince you at the start, but after a certain point everything will inevitably collapse, leaving you with basically nothing to show for potentially years of work. Spending that same amount of time focusing on building actual skills is like building a staircase out of brick and mortar -- it'll seem slower at the start, it'll seem like you're doing a bunch of shit that's not related to going higher when you're mixing the mortar or running all the way to the store instead of just grabbing chairs from inside, but it's actual meaningful progress instead of the illusion of it.

That being said, I don't think that this is necessarily exclusive with the advice of 'Make small games", but most people read 'small' and think 'Execute' and not 'a game made in 2 days with the specific goal of teaching me how to add juice to the UI'

Also, doing stuff that isn't the exact straight line to what you want is how you cultivate taste instead of making a thing that's a copy of a copy of a copy. Taste is important. The world needs more taste.

edit: I swear I posted this before I got to your 'taste' slide

Studying film is probably one of the best uses of your time outside of game dev stuff. Cameras and lighting are so important. Color balance, contrast, composition, framing, all that stuff. There's so much camera trickery in 3d animation that comes from real world filming techniques. oOo

yeah games are the culmination of so many different creative mediums , without strong foundational knowledge in at least one area , you will get overwhelmed by the complexity and wont improve in a proper way. like tasking yourself with “make a city “ when you haven't even built a deck or dug a well or hooked up electricity or learned how to drive.
