  I wouldn’t have returned any of his deposit. &nbsp;You gave him the terms up front, that satisfies your obligation in my opinion. &nbsp;As for your obligation to deliver something to your client, I think you did. &nbsp;The time, talent and expertise is what he paid for as well as the table. &nbsp;You’re soft hearted, which makes you a good person to have as a friend, &nbsp;Congratulations

  As you can imagine, after 45 years in the woodworking business, I&apos;ve had my ups and downs. I&apos;ve had many disappointments with customers changing their minds. It seemed like most of this was over custom furniture. I started concentrating more on kitchen cabinets and I bought minimal used machinery for building cabinets when I could. What I figured out was that cabinets are more likely to be &quot;real&quot; jobs than furniture, which I started to call &quot;unreal&quot; &nbsp;jobs. Time and time again it was proven true. I&apos;m very close to retirement now, not that I&apos;ve made much money over the years, but I got by. In the last few years I had great clients and I was able to design and build kitchens that were creative. Looking, back, I was lucky by meeting the right people and keeping at it.

  I’ve owned a sawmill for 10 yrs and have been in this situation several times….i only take 10% deposit and i always try to feel out the customer first now……i &nbsp;have been known to respectfully turn down a job. Some people are &nbsp;almost impossible to please &nbsp;, and they have very obvious personality traits when observed. Sometimes though , life happens and a customer honestly has fallen upon a hardship…..and i just give the whole deposit back in these cases, which are very few….i end up eating it or giving it away at Xmas to a family member…..i think you did the right thing in my opinion….and sleep is so much deeper when we do the right thing. You’re an awesome craftsmen , good luck with all your future ventures…..Algoa Millworks

  With the amount of time ,materials,and labor you have invested in the table I would’ve kept the entire deposit! <br>This buyer sounded like from the beginning he was changing his mind and was looking for an excuse to not purchase it !

  After running a custom shop for some years on two different occasions, here are my Golden rules i learned the hard way.<br><br>1 - Do one design drawing and charge for it. If they dont like it they get a second drawing for free. (publish all drawings somewhere so you have proof for when someone inevitably steals your designs. Clients will often decline your quote then get their cousin Randy to make it from your drawings)<br>2 - 50% deposit before you start<br>3 - Balance paid before delivery after photo proof of completion. Never ever deliver or install before final payment! No exception to this rule ever.<br>4 - Never ever return a deposit or even part of!<br><br>As for scary glueups there is no law that says you have to glue it all up at once just do half or a quarter, let it dry and then the next bit and so on. You can clamp it all up to make the clamping easier and reduse dint risk to clear glue surfaces, but you dont have to add all the glue at once

  Sorry about the heartache this project brought you. The product though is a truly marvelous piece. I am 80 now, still trying to hone my amateur hobbyist carpenter skills. You gave me a few new things to ponder and I thank you❤
