That realtor lady wasn't about to let a few dead bodies ruin a good commission.

I am glad that Natalie approached this movie with the exact right attitude and thus got full enjoyment out of it.

The relationship between Patrick and his secretary Jean is explored much more in the book, and it's probably my favourite aspect of it. Jean is sweet and naive, and despite her crush on Patrick, she also believes she's not "good enough" for someone as successful, charming and attractive as him. But to Bateman, Jean is the only real and authentic person in his life. Every other connection he has is vapid and shallow, built on empty displays of materialism. But Jean is genuine and kind, and he both loves and despises her for it. He can't date her, because his "friends" would judge him, which would stop him from fitting in. He envies the soul in her, which he finds lacking in himself, but also can't quite bring himself to murder the only person in his life who shows him sincere empathy. To Patrick, Jean is the most beautiful thing in the world. She is the distillment of all humanity. She is the essence of everything he imitates, but can never fully become.

Natalie is the first reactor I've seen who has actually laughed at American Psycho without knowing it was a satire going in. The movie hits pretty hard these days.

“All of these men are psychopaths, Bateman’s just the one that’s murdering.”

You nailed it. This is why Patrick’s confession meant nothing. If everyone is a psycho, what’s he got to confess?

I love this movie because it’s not just a commentary on superficiality, but an indictment on materialism and the rich.

A realtor will cover up multiple murders in order to sell an apartment at full price, even to the point of looking the serial killer in the eyes and telling him to leave without a fuss. Money is worth more than lives.

A lawyer will cover up the murder, even as his killer confesses to him, all so his lies about having dinner with someone important aren’t exposed. Status is worth more than justice.

How can Patrick leave a blood trail through a lobby without being arrested? He’s rich. He takes for granted that the employees will just clean up after him, no questions asked, because he lives in a building where people pay for the privilege to not be inconvenienced by anything, even a police investigation into a neighbour.

Everyone is greedy. Everyone is guilty. Everyone is so psychopathically selfish.

“Oh my god, it even has a watermark”. I DIE LAUGHING at that line every single time. They’re playing this scene with such absolute seriousness.
🤣🤣🤣

One of the all time great black comedies. A lot of people think that Paul's apartment being clean at the end signals that it was all in his head, but I read it as the realtor being another psycho in a different way. She'd rather clean up all of the bodies than lose the sale of an expensive piece of property. Bateman really does all of the murders but he's protected by his privilege and the bizarre social life he lives in so he won't ever be caught. The only person who discovers him is his assistant, the one working class person close to Bateman who isn't murdered.
