BiG TAKE AWAY: Jim Lill discovered that a newer Focusrite Scarlett Interface preamp and a Neve 31105 don't sound too far apart from each other. Also highlights how far we have come with microelectronics, power efficiency, and integrated circuitry design. Keep in mind that the Neve 31105 was not designed to be a dramatically colored preamp.

Lastly, the biggest flaw I find in his hypothesis is that you can not infer that basically all preamps sound the same if you only thoroughly test two preamps side by side; especially if you have more than two on hand to test.

SUMMARY: Preamps do sound different. Some less different than others. Technology has advanced quite a bit.

Mad respect though for all the work he put into making that video; Insane!!!!!!!

Also, even slight changes in mic distance/position will make a difference orders of magnitude larger than using different preamps ever will.

The answer to your question is that humans have evolved to use tools and gadgets in the same way that people get fast cars only to follow speed limits. Our programming and materialism. People would take our lines of credit to buy snap-on tools instead of just buying a wrench that cost 1/10th the price

    You're primary points are correct.

But let's not forget features. Different preamps have different features (front and back panel features, mounting, etc).

As for sound outside features that change the sound, lets not forget that the harder we drive a preamp the more audible harmonic differences and slew-rate differences become. But if you don't do that it wont be as important… however, if you do, it matters more.

I still like the 5088 neve the most and it is a console that i would want to try! Yet recording on a budget there is enough gear out there to get great results and it will cost you not much

I’m sorry but my Golden Age Project GA73 doesn’t sound like my Avalon vt737sp BabyFace edition 🤷🏽‍♂️ I equate this argument to does a Rickenbacker sound like a Fender Jazz P?…..both are basses aren’t they? But yet they sound different

This preamp debate is the stupidest thing I’ve seen on the internet this year

I always enjoy your videos and I really liked the Behringer compressor vid ❤
When you did the initial A/B, I didn't hear any difference at all. And therefore wasn't surprised there wasn't one 😂
On thing occurred to me though. I wonder if Jim Lill or many other audio You Tubers use different camera lenses when shooting their videos, and I wonder if by virtue of having multiple lenses they see a "difference" visually in the outcome. And if there is a difference is it due to the lens, or the conditions under which each shot was taken. After all, any video or audio input device is just a lens of a kind at the end of the day.
