  The greatest thing about the Jim Lil preamp video is the conversation he got started,  and all the other people showing their evidence.   It feels like there's a lot more information on the subject than there was before.

  On the Shadow Hills MONO GAMA, you can change output transformer from nickel to discrete to steel--there is a discernable difference 😂 so even the same mic pre can sound different from itself.

  Colt needs to participate in a true double blind test to prove that they’re different otherwise he’s no different than the audiophiles to tell you they can tell the difference between $1000 speaker wire and the one that costs 80 bucks which is absolute nonsense. They’re either trying to justify a purchase or they got something free from the manufacturer.

  I have both a SSL 2 and a Neve 88m for my home studio and the main difference I hear is separation or the 3D thing with the 88m. I also ran my stuff recorded on my SSL 2 back through the 88m and it magically did the 3D thing

  I think you guys may be the only channel that has actually listened to Jim’s argument without getting emotional. “One’s talking about clean and one’s talking about dirty… and they’re both right” is spot on. That distinction has been missing from most of the responses.

  Jim Lill claimed that no engineers push preamps into saturation and that has been wrong since the early 60s. Even in the 50s the engineers found the tube preamps sounded better when pushed a bit. I've watched the interviews with the legendary engineers talking about "pushing the preamps until the console comes alive."
