  A Savonius wind turbine is a classic type of Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) invented by Finnish engineer Sigurd Savonius in 1922.

  If it uses the wind to generate power, it is a windmill - literally a factory (mill) using wind. The magnus effect has long been used in windmills - we have several of them on the 2012 Olympic Park in London - erected in 2011, before Shimizu&apos;s design was patented. They are not running currently because the magnus effect kills the bearings. Turbines work by turning head-on wind into circular motion - the bearings do not suffer sideways pressure, which is where most of the energy used by a magnus windmill comes from. The Shimizu design works well in high winds, but in calmer conditions it is much less effective than a conventional turbine. For Japan, this design is great for providing power when turbines have to shut down; for most of the rest of the World, it is a solution to a problem they do not have.

  At around 10 minutes the premise of the video gets undermined by the commentary, which explains why the vertical turbines haven’t been adopted as much as the horizontal or propeller turbines. If the aim is to produce a wind turbine that can withstand winds over 25 mph, vertical offers a pricier solution. But if the incidence of higher winds isn’t there, it’s a less efficient system that is waiting for a disaster that, most likely, will never happen. It’s like buying a garbage truck that can collect 20 tons of waste but it operates in an area that only produces 15 tons of waste.

  The largest operational wind turbines generate up to 20 megawatts, a bit more than these lab versions..

  You can build wind &quot;engines&quot; that can withstand enormous wind speeds, but the energie grid has to be laid out to operate in a wide range of transport making it over dimensioned. The only way out is massive flexibel storage capacity.<br><br>I was to quick. The eggbeater windmill regulates it output by the rotation speed of the cylinders.

  25ms is a force 10 on the Beaufort scale. No wonder they shut down.<br>On the south coast of England these conditions only apply for hours in a year less than a day!!!!

  One thing you can do to spinning blades is to feather them, so the wind only catches the edge slowing the rotation to near zero. &nbsp;Still not ideal in hurricane winds though.

  Sreange! &nbsp;I have seen wind turbines like these, working some 30 to 40 years ago. I don&apos;t know why they were given up.
