I was put on antidepressants 50 years ago after a brutal rape and was told I'd need them for the rest of my life. I'd been extremely depressed, and doctors told me my brain didn't work normally and never would again. Last year, I told myself that's BS, and very slowly weaned off the meds. I can think and feel with more clarity and conviction than ever before. Please, everyone, remember the key lies in you, not the medication. EDIT: The antidepressant was supposed to take care of the extreme anxiety I felt. It did nothing. I was switched from one to another and eventually placed on an anxiety medication as well. Since I stopped taking the antidepressant, my anxiety has lowered significantly. I'm not saying this is the case for everyone. But it was for me.

I feel, one of the biggest difficulties with depression diagnosis and treatment is the unrealistic and undefined state of "happy". It is not normal to be happy all the time. I also think it is unrealistic to expect anti-depresants to "fix" a normal response to genuinely bad life circumstances. My friend was confused why her antidepressants were not working, then I met her boyfriend. He was a jerk. They broke up, she got a better job, bought a new house. Suddenly, she didn't need antidepressants. I think the drugs didn't work because her situation was actually bad, and her brain was giving correct signals for the situation. How many people are trying to use antidepressants to treat depression when in reality, their situation is actually depressing?

My personal experience was that I was in a depression for about 20 years. Tried hypnotherapy, counselling, exercise, meditation etc..and sertraline eventually solved it BUT I changed. I was coasting through life. Weaning myself off antidepressants was awful, but I did it, and then hit the gym twice a day for a year. Culled a load of fake friends too. The anxiety went, along with depression, and in four years it hasn’t returned.

Unmet human needs (chronic) fuels disturbing emotions we call "depression".

From a somatic perspective, depression is not always simply a disorder of mood or thinking. It can be understood as part of the body’s survival response. When we face danger, the nervous system activates fight or flight. If neither fighting nor escaping feels possible, the body may shift into a freeze or shutdown state.

This freeze response can look a lot like depression: low energy, emotional numbness, lack of motivation, withdrawal from others, difficulty thinking clearly, and a feeling of being stuck. In this state, the nervous system is trying to conserve energy and protect the person from overwhelming stress.

Rather than asking “What’s wrong with you?”, a somatic approach asks “What happened to your nervous system?” Understanding depression through this lens can help reduce shame and increase compassion, because many symptoms may be adaptive survival responses rather than personal failings.

As someone who lived with depression most of my life, this is a tough question. The first time i ever took antidepressants, it was like life went from greyscale to color. I never even knew that i was missing anything.

That said, i don't take them anymore. I found a way to see the colors in the world on my own now, but i don't know if i would ever have even known they were there without the antidepressants to show me first.

The Mind I Became by Cal Hollins caught my attention because it seems to ask a pretty simple but uncomfortable question: how much of who you are today did you actually choose?

Saying that depression is caused by something bad happening glides over the lasting effect that 'bad things' can have on the body and nervous system. Chronic hypervigilance and state of stress and trauma can cause oversecretion of adrenaline, cortisol and other lasting physical reactions that can take a real toll on the body, mind and functioning.

Emotional numbing is correct. I decided to feel like garbage rather than feel nothing.

I have been depressed several times in my life.
My observations were that depression is a self healing mechanism in the body.
When you are totally overwhelmed, stressed, and you can't cope anymore, it is a method to shut the entire system down, so you can heal.
