I am a therapist in private practice and have been in the field since 1984. It’s nearly impossible to get people to understand what the mental health field has become - people now want a diagnosis and want medications and are rarely interested in looking for causes of symptoms. It was easier years ago, but the acculturation of “mental illness” and “chemical imbalance” is so complete that it feels intractable.

The idea of an amplified placebo effect from side effects actually makes those small trial differences make a lot more sense.

Took trazodone for 15 years. Told my doctor that I want to stop taking it. I was at 150 mg. Weaned off for 3 months. Felt horrible the whole time. Stopped finally 3 weeks ago. Tough few weeks, lots of ups and downs but I think I can see the end in sight. I will never take meds like that again.

Are the person's negative emotions the cause for the imbalance? I strongly believe, YES! There's plenty of research that show toxic unsolved emotions cause physical, mental and psychological problems. Solve the emotional problems, then the others take care of themselves. It's also the main key to longevity.

Love the comment that you CAN change your brain!!! Depression doesn’t have to be a lifelong pill popping ordeal!! Just like alcoholic disorder. It’s never too late to stop. It doesn’t just happen, I guess it is hard to accept that healing really is in OUR CONTROL, starts w a mindset just like getting a good grade at school, etc. and perseverance!!!

I’ve seen the awful things SSRIs do to a person first hand. These pharmacies should be held accountable. This is dangerous mad science! And people trying to get off, should be aware of how dangerous they are. Ween off slowly. Very slowly! Its horrific.

I think that instead of telling people to just pop a dangerous pill, it would be wise to look at other options first. The use of metabolic therapy as advocated by Dr Georgia Ede and Chris Palmer has shown a lot of promise. Exersize, diet , sleep and meditation are all important. Trying to give pills to solve imbalances in the brain is almost an impossible task because the body has homeostatic mechanisms to counter any effects the drugs might have. This means going back and forth to the doctor and letting him guess at the tweak s he'll need to make. This cycle will most often go on for the remainder of a persons life. If the doctor wants to deperscribe, the brain chemistry is so fkd up that to safely deperscribe might take many months.

I have lived most of my life diagnosed with 4 mental illnesses. They are Dysthymia (now called Persistent Depressive Disorder), Major depression, PTSD and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. A ketogenic diet has put all 4 illnesses into remission. I am less than one month away from tapering off Venlafaxine, which had turned into an addiction. It has taken me a year to do this, and I am not done. These last few weeks of tapering are difficult. I am experiencing withdrawal symptoms despite tapering. I was on this drug for over 30 years. This is a number of class action lawsuits in the making. I mourn the loss of virtually my entire adult life to mental illnesses and Big Pharma’s incompetence and desire to make, “the big bucks.”

Fucking with the chemicals in people’s brains is never a good idea. Similar to fucking around with viruses in labs. And spraying toxic chemicals on our food supply. And neurotoxic shit like alcohol on every street corner. Microplastics, on and on. We live in a hopelessly fucked up place and time. Man-made illness everywhere created by science, “health”care, economy/jobs, profit motives. And a diffusion of responsibility for any harms due to the common interests of our global mega institutions.

I’ve always felt that if your mind is powerful enough to get you to a depressed state, then it’s likely powerful enough to get you back to your baseline. Assuming your baseline is your normal, happier place. I’m an example that it works by consuming a whole food, clean diet, getting decent sleep, moving my body through excercise and being aware that I can reframe my thoughts and get myself on a better track. It’s a mindset that you have to be open to considering and actually apply. Clearly, there are different levels of mental illness, and it’s not a one size fits all, but we have to heal through the belief that pills cure everything. Prioritizing the health of our mind, body and soul and removing the everyday garbage that’s distracting us away from that, is absolutely key to healing. ❤️
